Beetroot boosts sporting performance in athletes
Medical Xpress / Univ. of South Australia / Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition ^ | June 8, 2022 | Noah M. A. d'Unienville et al

Posted on 06/21/2022 9:17:54 PM PDT by ConservativeMind

Beetroot shows it can provide a competitive edge when playing sport.

Evaluating the performance effects of foods that are thought to have a beneficial effect on aerobic performance, researchers found that beetroot, grapes, sour cherries, and pine bark extract, which contribute to nitric oxide availability in the body, boost endurance exercise performance.

The meta-analysis evaluated the effect of consuming nitrate-rich foods (typically green leafy vegetables), foods that contain polyphenols (such as berries, cherries and cocoa), and L-Citrulline (found in watermelon) on exercise endurance performance.

The study found that the nitrate levels contained in beetroot, which have been shown to boost blood flow and increase the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to muscles during exercise, helped athletes perform better more quickly.

Similarly, the polyphenols in grapes, cherries and pine bark extract helped protect nitrate from degradation in the body, boosting stamina. And, despite the ability of L-citrulline to boost nitric oxide production in the body, consuming watermelon (high in L-citrulline) did not boost exercise performance.

"There's a lot of interest in nitrate-rich and polyphenol-rich foods because of their potential to boost exercise performance, but just because they contain these elements, doesn't mean this will translate into improved exercise performance," D'Unienville says.

"While our study shows that beetroot (among other foods) can boost performance, other nitrate-rich foods such as red spinach, Swiss chard and rhubarb, did not show similar benefits.

"Also, while grapes, pine bark extract, and sour cherries can help athletes perform better and faster, we found no effects for other polyphenol-rich foods, including blackcurrant, cocoa, ginseng, green tea or raisins."

Co-researcher Jon Buckley says their effects did discriminate.

"The results did show that more significant effects among athletes who were less fit, and also that men were more likely to benefit from these foods than women," Prof Buckley says.

I will use grapes to obtain that boost.
Sour Cherries are a punishment, worse even than Crabapples.
Whenever I think of beets, I think of that intense crimson that is hard to remove. I like picked beets once in a while.

I read, don't remember where, that most of the citrulline is in the rind part of the melon, and in the pink part near the rind.

I wonder how sour plums would fare. They were a potent staple for samurai. “Umeboshi”

you can also buy nitric oxide supplements- i took them for awhile- they did help a bit- nothing to write home about in my experience, but you could definitely feel a bit of difference-

Next, they will ban the use of performance enhancing natural foods like beetroot.

L-Citrulline (found in watermelon)

Somewhere I recall seeing a Texas A&M study of watermelon to see if the L-Citrulline could be a natural source of the active ingredient in a well-known blue pill.

l citrulline converts into nitric oxide. nitric oxide is what viagra and cialis stimulate the body to make. the sun also stimulates the capillaries beneath the skin to make nitric oxide.

Young people make nitric oxide in abundance but the body’s production in both men and women declines with age.

Nitric oxide is what enables the blood vessels of the body to expand and contract with each contraction of the heart. as nitric oxide levels decline—the blood vessel’s ability to expand and contract declines. Blood pressure rises. This is true for both men and women.

Both men and women need to supplement or otherwise increase their levels of nitric oxide as they get older.

beets increase nitric oxide levels. apparently the nitrates in beets do a better job of this than the l citrulline in watermellons.

Would you argue for a different explanation. That is would you say that beets/grapes/sour cherries/pine bark extract increase performance via a different pathway than nitric oxide?

Sour cherries, pine bark extract, and grapes had polyphenols that were found to directly help preserve the use of nitric acid.

“Similarly, the polyphenols in grapes, cherries and pine bark extract helped protect nitrate from degradation in the body…”

They don't produce nitric acid.

The other items reviewed perform other functions that don't impact the isolated function of nitric acid.

Yes, I saw that report and it is stupid.

They say it is important to still take vitamins and minerals if you are deficient in them.

How do you truly know if you are deficient in them? You practically can't, so we take supplements as an insurance policy because a multivitamin/multimineral is cheaper than future health problems.

I can't believe how stupid those researchers are.
