California’s electric rates are among the highest in the country. Three big power companies propose charging fixed rates based on income, saying low-income customers will save money. Critics doubt it’ll work.

"From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" Following the words of Karl Marx, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs”, California’s corrupt power monopolies are going full Commie. Three major utility companies in California are looking to restructure customer billing, and part of that means customers could be charged based on how much money they make. Sure, why not? Charging people based on what they use, rather than the tier they occupy in the social justice human pyramid is too capitalist anyway. Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric and...

Eversource has asked the state Public Utilities Regulatory Authority to approve an increase that the company said could increase the electric bill for an average customer by nearly 50 percent, or $85 per month, on the supply portion of the bill. Eversource said, if approved, the increased rates would be in effect from Jan. 1, 2023, through June 30, 2023. Eversource is looking to increase the Standard Service Rate for residential customers who receive their energy supply from Eversource from 12.1 cents per kilowatt-hour to 24.2 cents per kWh, compared to 11.5 cents per kWh last winter, Eversource said. The...

Long-term CTH readers might remember in 2014 when President Obama claimed U.S. families had been paying too little for electricity for too long. As soon as Joe Biden took office, he began implementing the Green New Deal energy policy that, (a) directly forces higher costs for energy; and (b) is now creating massive problems. In July I noted my own electricity bill had jumped 28% in a single month. That bill was followed by another almost identical increase this month. A review of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for July [Data Here] shows that nationally the same thing is happening....

On August 2, 2022, Xcel Energy submitted its plan to spend more than $300 million on building 730 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and increasing the use of electric school buses to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC). The proposal would force Minnesota families and businesses to pay higher electricity prices to finance the construction and operation of the EV chargers, plus a 10 percent government-approved profit for Xcel Energy if the PUC gives Xcel its blessing. Goals are not mandates.. The point of a monopoly electric utility is to provide reliable, affordable electricity to the customers who are forced to...

While the climate strike and Greta Thunberg may have the limelight this week, the unwavering truth of climate and energy policy remains: people are unwilling to pay the costs associated with reducing carbon dioxide emissions. A recent poll from the Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation shows that support for reducing carbon dioxide emissions withers under the slightest bit of scrutiny. The poll shows people favor taxing the wealthy to pay for increasing electricity costs, which is pretty much par for the course on every issue, and raising taxes on energy, even if that leads to higher prices. ... when people are...

Michigan legislature to raise your electric bill Posted: June 1, 2008 01:13 PM Updated: June 1, 2008 01:13 PM LANSING, Mich. -- State lawmakers plan to raise residential electric bills by as much as 15 percent so businesses and schools can pay less. Prices historically have been "skewed" by state regulators so residents pay less than the actual cost of electricity, while businesses pay more. Legislators acknowledge residential customers would experience some sticker shock, but many no longer want to force business customers to subsidize residential rates, in part because they think Michigan's business rates _ which traditionally run higher...

Gore Attacked For High Electricity Bills Conservative Group That Disputes Global Warming Says Ex-Vice President Isn't "Walking The Walk" NASHVILLE, Tenn., Feb. 28, 2007 (AP) Al Gore, a leading voice against global warming, is being criticized by a conservative group that claims his Nashville mansion uses too much electricity. A spokeswoman for Gore said the former vice president invests in enough renewable energy to make up for the home's power consumption. Gore's documentary film "An Inconvenient Truth," which chronicled his campaign against global warming, won an Academy Award on Sunday. The next day, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research put...

When they're out to get you, keep cool BY DAVE BARRY (This classic Dave Barry column was originally published on July 16, 1995.) Recently, I was in my office, with a lot to do, including write a column, when I got a phone call informing me that the electric company had cut off my power. Years ago, I would have responded to this petty annoyance with a pointless, immature outburst of anger. But since then I have learned that stress management is vital to health. So I hung up the phone, took a deep breath, exhaled slowly, then punched my...
