Former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger says he's "never seen anyone who is as amateurish in the conduct of his foreign relations as this President." Eagleburger said Obama is "playing with fire here, and he's playing with dynamite and he doesn't understand it, you would think after almost two years in office he would understand it, but he doesn't."

Tell me something I have not already heard from a number of former State and Defense people already. What makes this sooooo juicy is not how he defines Obama foreign policy but how this former “HW” Secretary of State defends the current Secretary of State. “Frankly I don’t know how she’s lasted. ”The conversation starts with Eagleburger’s analysis of the Honduras situation, which he correctly describes as the democratically elected government trying to preserve democracy for Hondurans … and remove a President who was hoping to be Latin America’s next in a long line of dictators. A former secretary of state and supporter of Republican presidential nominee John McCain says that McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, isn't up to the task of taking over the presidency in a crisis but could become "adequate" if not "a genius in the job." Then again, added Lawrence Eagleburger, several other vice presidents were also not ready. And he said he was confident that Palin, Alaska's governor, was tough enough if called to serve. Eagleburger, who was secretary of state under President George H.W. Bush, has been cited frequently by McCain as one of several seasoned diplomats and former Cabinet...

No context whatsoever provided so we’re left to wonder in what sense they’re problematic. Problematic because they’re leery of McCain and might not turn out in force in November? Problematic because they’re the “agents of intolerance” Maverick once accused them of being? Problematic because they’re known for asserting that the U.S. engineered the AIDS virus and may just have let the attack on Pearl Harbor happen to justify a colonialist war in the Pacific? Oh, sorry; he said Christian right. My advice to McCain: Give a speech perfunctorily condemning every freaky thing any Christian preacher has ever said while embracing...

The Bush administration has indicated its readiness to recognize a unilateral declaration of independence by ethnic Albanians in Kosovo, a province of the Republic of Serbia that since 1999 has been under United Nations administration and NATO military control. ... Attempting to impose a settlement on Serbia would be a direct challenge to the Russian Federation, which opposes any Kosovo settlement not accepted by Belgrade. We believe an imposed settlement of the Kosovo question and seeking to partition Serbia's sovereign territory without its consent is not in the interest of the United States. The blithe assumption of American policy —...

I hope someone can replace this thread with a transcript of Neal's interview with Eagleburger. Eagleburger was saying that "it is time to get tough with Iran"..."I don't know if war is the right word, but we need to knock them around a little", etc.

by Mark Finkelstein June 22, 2006 Norah loves Larry. At least, she loves the way Larry Eagleburger phrased things about North Korea. At the same time, Larry made it fairly clear that there's no love lost between himself and Dick Cheney. The former Bush, Sr. Secretary of State appeared on this evening's Hardball. Guest host Norah O'Donnell interviewed him along with former Clinton defense official Ashton Carter. Carter had in turn written an op-ed in today's Washington Post, which as indicated by its title, If Necessary, Strike and Destroy, advocates blowing the North Korean ICBM off its launch pad if...

President Bush's nomination of John Bolton as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations has generated a bad case of dyspepsia among a number of senators, who keep putting off a confirmation vote. That hesitation is now portrayed as a consequence of Bolton's purported "mistreatment" of several State Department intelligence analysts. But this is a smoke screen. The real reasons Bolton's opponents want to derail his nomination are his oft-repeated criticism of the United Nations and other international organizations, his rejection of the arguments of those who ignore or excuse the inexcusable (i.e., the election of Sudan to the U.N. Human...

Eagleburger's Wise Words Edward I. Koch Tuesday, April 20, 2004 On Sunday, April 4, while watching the Fox News Channel, I saw former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger interviewed on the rising insurrection in Iraq. The interview followed a whole day of televised gloom, doom, pessimism and Bush-bashing by the talking heads of medialand. I listened in amazement and agreement to the opinions of Eagleburger, who was secretary of state from 1992 to 1993 under President George H.W. Bush. The next day, I expected Eagleburger's views to be covered by the media. There was not one reference to his comments....

WASHINGTON (Talon News) -- Former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger reacted to reports Monday of French collaboration with the regime of Saddam Hussein saying, "France is not our friend." Documents emerged over the weekend indicating that the French foreign ministry informed their Iraqi counterparts about private communications with U.S. government officials on an ongoing basis. Eagleburger was not surprised by the revelations, suggesting that America needs to "close off most of the avenues of relationships" and to treat France "as a third level and not allies." The former official in the previous Bush administration said, "I don't see how our...
