No context whatsoever provided so were left to wonder in what sense theyre problematic. Problematic because theyre leery of McCain and might not turn out in force in November? Problematic because theyre the agents of intolerance Maverick once accused them of being? Problematic because theyre known for asserting that the U.S. engineered the AIDS virus and may just have let the attack on Pearl Harbor happen to justify a colonialist war in the Pacific? Oh, sorry; he said Christian right.
My advice to McCain: Give a speech perfunctorily condemning every freaky thing any Christian preacher has ever said while embracing the preachers themselves on grounds that to do otherwise wouldnt fully reflect the American experience. Be sure to hint that anyone who disagrees is sort of a racist.
Eagleburger was trying to have fun. He was mocking his fellow panelist Kurtzer, sitting to the left of the others (where he belongs), and making noises and funny, impatient faces, while Ann Lewis was speaking. But more importantly, he did not mince his words. In a response to a question about the religious right, an important component of the Republican coalition, he said that it was, indeed a serious problem, and reminded his listeners that he now lives in Charlottesville, surrounded by such people that he needs to fight.
Meanwhile, the left is in a froth over McCain accidentally substituting Al Qaeda for the Mahdi Army in something he said about Iran training jihadis in Iraq. Exit question: Do you really want to play the words mean things! game today of all days, nutroots? Really?
The Christian right is a PROBLEM??? So, is anyone going to pester me about why I’m not voting for this jackass?

Never forget McCain's "agents of intolerance" remarks that were pointedly aimed at Christians.
He has an almost Clintonian propensity for saying whatever he thinks will win over the crowd. We need leaders who govern by principle, not popularity.
You...you must want Obama or Hillary in control of our military and Al Queda to declare victory! /plantation voter logic
Actually can someone give a name to this 'plantation' logic that's being used to scare conservatives into voting for McCain?...this fearmongering? I'm sure there's a psychological term for it.
I was not voting for him before you were not voting for him.
I thought we were irrelevant anyway.
I suppose on one hand, at least they are thinking about us....
But I gotta tell ya, if I hear more of these warm, fuzzy, hgu-filled comments, I don’t think I’ll be able to vote for McCain fast enough...

Obamaphobia, Clintophobia.
But...but... :
He's a veteran AND he was a POW!
It says "REPUBLICAN" next to his name! (his best friends are rats)
He's against ABORTION! (But not stem cell research)
He's for STRONG borders ! (and amnesty)
He'll WIN the war on terror! (While trying the enemy in civil court, and NOT using waterboarding.)
He'll see to it we keep our constitutional rights! (Except for free speech before an election)
I'm sure the usual suspects will be along soon with more reasons RINO boy deserves our vote.
I’ve never supported this man for any office so I’m not sure how that can be.
Sorry to burden you with some light political humor there PF.
Sorry to be so literal to miss your joke - my apologies.
Like it or not, you are citing precisely the reason many Republicans have voted to nominate McCain... Their fear of Hitlery or a different Demodog, for them, trumped those parenthetical remarks. Likewise, those precise reasons, but INCLUDING the parentheticals, are why McCain is very likely to win Nov. in a major landslide, if he keeps his nose clean from here on.

Personally I would not give a lot of weight to the comments of a left wing writer in a far left publication pontificating about the significance of a line of Lawrence Eagleburger
LOL! Okay, okay - just a chuckle.
You may need to self medicate in November.

Sometimes I think there is just too much Hot Air out there.....
You are putting way, way too much importance on the power of Conservatives, and far too little on the mushy middle, who McCain has cultivated for the last decade.
Tell me: On which ISSUES does McCain have a stance (and record) on which Hitlery or ODumbo will be able to cite as reasons that people should vote for them rather than for McCain? Exactly which of the Red States is he going to lose, and, to make it more complicated for the Dems, which of the Blue States are going to be in play? More to the point, on which of those issues would someone more conservative (thinking Hunter) be able to garner more votes? Make an effort to really analyze this, instead of throwing invective. If you do so honestly, I believe you will come to the conclusion that either of the Dems have a very difficult road to the WH against him.
As I’ve repeated since last summer, McCain is not even close to my favored candidate, but he is going to be very difficult for the Demodogs to beat in large part because he is so despised by the rabid conservative wing of this country (of which I am a part.)
