Gov. Jerry Brown said this afternoon that he would consider signing a budget in which the Legislature extends temporary tax increases - subject to a later vote. "That's a possibility," Brown said after meeting with local officials in Riverside. "They can do all cuts, they can have no budget, or they can... extend the taxes subject to their expiring if the people vote 'No." Brown spokeswoman Elizabeth Ashford said such a plan would still require a two-thirds vote in the Legislature. Brown has been unable to find the Republican votes necessary in either house to move forward his proposal to...

UPDATE: A senior House Source confirms to Fox News that "deem and pass is dead" Developing.. Fox News has learned that House Democrats are considering dropping a controversial parliamentary ploy to pass the Senate's version of the health care bill before the House begins on a second "fix-it" resolution, known as reconciliation. Senior House Democratic sources indicate that there is an ongoing discussion about dropping what's billed a "deem and pass" strategy. Democrats have signaled for days that they would probably use a procedural two-step to get the House to approve the Senate’s health care measure.

I’m reminded of the blessing from the opening of Fiddler on the Roof, where the rabbi is asked whether there is an appropriate prayer for the Tsar. The rabbi responds, “May the Lord bless and keep the Tsar … far away from us!” Nancy Pelosi invokes St. Joseph the Worker on his feast day to exhort him to help her pass a bill that will provide funding for abortions in short order Today is the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, particularly important to Italian-Americans. It’s a day where we remember and pray to St. Joseph to benefit the workers...

According to the official site of the House Rules Committee, “questions of privilege” relate to “matters affecting the safety, dignity or integrity of the House, or the rights, reputation or conduct of a member acting as a representative.” House leaders are poised to use a procedural tactic of questionable constitutionality to move the single most consequential piece of legislation in over seven decades through the House without a vote. Here’s the idea: (1) pass a rule to bring to the floor a “reconciliation” measure that would detoxify certain provisions in the Senate-passed health-reform bill, and (2) insert in the rule...

The Democrats have now cleared the way to ram the final health care socialism package through the House this Sunday by using "deem and pass." They are in open and direct violation of Article 1, Section 7 of the United States Constitution. The vast majority of Americans who are adamant in their opposition to this imposed socialism are screaming at the top of there lungs to have their elected "representatives" hear them and vote the way the majority wants. The Democrats in the House and Senate have a message for all of you. Screw the constitution, and screw you, too!...

Forget the process. Deem, shmeem, just get it done. I assume the President also means, ignore the people themselves who both nationwide and surprisingly, in Connecticut too, reject this government takeover of healthcare and are paying attention to the process. Six in ten Americans (60%) agree that a current Democrat proposal to send the Senate health care bill to the president without voting up or down on it is “unfair.”

Unconstitutional Health Care Solution? Law professor breaks down the legality of Dems pushing through reform without a vote

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday traded fire with Republicans over a procedural rule that would allow House members to pass sweeping health care changes without a direct up-or-down vote on the Senate-passed version of the legislation. Republicans are riveting their fire on the maneuver - which could marry Senate health care legislation that some of her members don't like with "fixes" that they do - as possibly their last chance to stop the nearly $1 trillion, 10-year plan as it nears a make-or-break vote as soon as this weekend. The vote promises to be extremely close, and Pelosi has...

As I understand it, if you "deem" Obamacare passed, then it's passed even though it has never been voted upon and passed. Therefore, 1. Let's "deem" our income tax paid this year. After all, if we deem it so, then it is so. 2. Let's "deem" our census papers filled out and returned. Again, deeming is doing. Short of going illegal, what legal protest could Americans use that would gain publicity and demonstrate our rejection of massive spending? Answer: the W-4, Withholding Form. Claim an amount of dependents that would require you to write a check for your taxes at...

While a student at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, I had the privilege of having Dr. Scott Hahn as one of my Scripture professors. One thing he taught us is to look out “rumble strips” in the Bible. Imagine yourself cruising along, when suddenly you feel seismic vibrations in your car and hear that annoying muffled sound—you’re fast approaching a toll booth and the rumble strips are telling you to slow down and pay attention. So it is with passages in scripture which seem to disrupt the otherwise smooth narrative of salvation history. They seem to be randomly inserted in...
