The local chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon is planning to pursue legal action against the University of Oklahoma, and possibly OU President David Boren. The group has hired high-profile attorney Stephen Jones to represent them. Jones told NewsChannel 4 the group is outraged over President Boren shutting down the fraternity house and branding all SAE members as racists and bigots. Jones says the two students who were expelled because of the incident have apologized sincerely for their remarks, and now the incident is being exploited. He said they lacked judgment in a social setting, but they should not be tarred...

OKLAHOMA CITY -- University of Oklahoma President David Boren called on lawmakers Friday to reconsider the passage of a bill that would allow certain people to carry guns on college campuses. "If it would help for me to get down on my knees to plead with the Legislature for the safety of our students, I would do so," Boren said in a prepared statement. House Bill 2513 by Rep. Jason Murphey, R-Guthrie, passed 65-36 on Thursday. It would allow veterans, active-duty military and National Guard and reserve personnel, and people trained in law en forcement to carry concealed guns on...

Dear OU Students, Faculty, and Staff, I want to thank you again for your responsible and constructive reaction to the tragic event which occurred last Saturday evening. I appreciate the concern which many of you have expressed for the family and friends of the deceased. Most of the news media, including our own OU Daily, and most citizens have responded very responsibly. Unfortunately, there are always a few who do not. Among the core beliefs which define us as Americans and which define us as members of the OU family from all backgrounds is a respect for others. We believe...

Forget “The Scholar.” Fifteen-year-old Katelyn Wilbanks from Catoosa, Oklahoma, received her “full ride” scholarship without having to undergo a battery of tests and challenges against stiff competition. Her own challenges, though, have been a bit more difficult.Wilbanks was born with spina bifida, a birth defect that’s resulted in 54 surgeries. Her left leg was amputated last year. Doctors expected her to die as a toddler, but she’s continued to defy the odds. Now she dreams of attending the University of Oklahoma, becoming a physician and helping others fight this disease. Thanks to the university and the “Today Show,” that dream might...

Drinking will be banned at University of Oklahoma fraternities and residence halls under new policies announced Wednesday, two months after a 19-year-old student died of alcohol poisoning. University of Oklahoma President David Boren said the rules will go into effect Jan. 18 at the start of the new semester. Three violations will end in a student's suspension for one semester. The university also will set up a hot line for students to report violations, and will expand alcohol education programs. Drinking is already prohibited at sororities. Boren will present the policies to the Board of Regents Monday for approval. Regents...
