  • Need help getting rid of Adobe Flash allow/deny icon

The past few days a new nuisance with Adobe Flash has appeared on my computer. It's an icon that asks to install an ad cookie on my computer. If you click deny, you don't get to view the video. Normally I wouldn't care, but some news clips I want to view. For example, there was a nice interview with Ivanka Trump on CBS News this morning and a FR thread about the disdain shown by the reporter in the questioning: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3431680/posts The question asks: "Allow CBS NEWS to store information on your computer?" Your choices are "Allow" or "Deny." Would...
  • Chaps make working 6502 CPU by hand. Because why not? (With discretes on a 12"x15" PCB)

The 6502 CPU is a fondly-remembered CPU* for good reason: along with chips from Motorola, Intel and Zilog, it helped create the personal computer business in the 1980s. However, this project is affection on a grand scale: some US enthusiasts are creating a transistor-for-transistor replica of the chip's design using discrete components. It's a good thing we're in the era of surface mount components, because even with small components the 3,218 transistors, 1,019 resistors and various other bits of the MOnSter 6502 need a four-layer PCB measuring 12” x 15” with components mounted on both sides. Because a big, slow,...

I live by myself and had been away from home for 12 hours. I often leave my home computer turned on even when I am gone. Last night, I noticed my computer screen was on and my computer was downloading Windows 10. I tried to stop it and, when I couldn't, I simply shut the computer off. After turning it back on, it said "restoring to your previous version" and I'm now back to Windows 7. I noticed that somehow my update settings had all been changed to allow Microsoft maximum access and Windows 10 upgrade was now categorized as...

Microsoft is planning to double the amount of promoted apps in the Start menu with the upcoming Anniversary Update to Windows 10. The software maker revealed at its WinHEC conference last week that the amount will increase from five currently up to 10 in the Anniversary Update that's due to roll out in July. Promoted apps are typically used on new PCs as links to encourage Windows 10 users to download Store apps, and different apps are promoted in different countries. Some promoted apps are pre-installed, but Microsoft notes that they can be fully uninstalled and any promoted items removed...

Google will soon close one more door on the Flash plugin in Chrome, requiring users to authorize each and every site where they want Flash to load, rather than running it automatically. Google has detailed a proposal to make HTML5 the default in Chrome over Adobe's Flash Player. If all goes to plan, by the fourth quarter of 2016 Chrome will not be using the Flash plugin for the vast majority of the web, and will only make an exception as the default media player for the world's top 10 sites that still rely on Flash. For the time being,...

The research team headed by Disney researchers with Carnegie Mellon and MIT has figured out a way to boost the speed and accuracy of monitoring wireless and non-battery RFID tags. They have used the finding to make interactive objects that would not need power source, as well as wireless pong controllers using an edition of the tech inside Disney's RFID-powered MagicBands. The discovery reults published as "RapID: A Framework for Fabricating Low-Latency Interactive Objects with RFID Tags," says that the system features more interesting latent functions for the inactive RFID system that depends on the control of an external drive....

Have a need to use my rickety old website. It is a 200 page FrontPage monster which has been sitting out at my ISP for quite a few years with little updating. I have recently been approached about restarting my column nationally. Am so excited! I would like to use the webpage as the vehicle and realize that it will need to be upgraded. I run WIN7. There is no extension left for Frontpage and the software currently does not recognize the website, there isn't even a screen to put in the username and code. The ISP states that FTP...

In a conference call on Tuesday night, an Apple team leader informed attorneys for the families of Austin Stephanos and Perry Cohen that they were unable to restore Stephanos’ badly-corroded iPhone 6 to working order. Austin and his friend Perry Cohen, both 14, went missing in July 2015 during a fishing trip off the coast of Jupiter, Florida. The U.S. Coast Guard found their boat during a search and rescue operation last year, but the boat was set adrift before it could be towed ashore by salvage teams. A Norwegian supply ship in March 2015 happened upon the 19-foot vessel...

If you are not sure what MODS are, then you should know that they are designed to be easy to access on any platform. The MODS will actually be created on a computer and, after that, uploaded...

The latest Windows 10 preview has been released by Microsoft, with changes making it more Linux and web-friendly. Gone, however, is automatic Wi-Fi sharing with contacts, with Microsoft citing low uptake over cost of development. Extensions to Edge, Microsoft’s browser alternative to Internet Explorer, in Windows 10 build 14342 can now be downloaded from the Windows Store. It ends the need to extract and load them from a local store but, Microsoft has warned pioneers, you’ll have to re-install any extensions they might have. Extensions are also available for AdBlock and Adblock Plus and a range of other applications while...

But when Deeana Pilling, who flew from New York City to Utah last week for the surprise, texted her daughter the photo, she realized she had a mistake. "Look where I am! Where are you?" Deeana texted daughter McKenna Pilling, a Utah State University student, after she sent her the selfie. "Where's...

Scooter and his wise old eyes have been around for 30 years, and his achievements in extreme elderliness have now been recognized by Guinness World Records. Gail Floyd – who generously houses Scooter even though he is a grown adult and should probably get his own place – said her companion has always been a lively people cat. When he was a kitten, he would play in Gail’s hair and ride on her shoulder. Now, in his golden years, Scooter still rises at 6 every morning. If he...

Picking one horse to win a race is hard enough, but four horses and their exact placements in the grand Kentucky Derby? It's practically impossible. But that's exactly what just happened thanks to a crowdsourced intelligence called Swarm Intelligence. The bet is called the superfecta, and there's a 1 in 540 chance of winning it — bettors have to pick out the horses that'll place first, second, third and fourth in the Derby. TechRepublic reporter Hope Reese challenged Unanimous A.I., a company that creates Swarm artificial intelligence technologies that allow groups to combine their thoughts and feelings in real-time to...
