Freeport, New York — At eWorks in Freeport, New York, piles of dusty televisions, personal computers, printers and other old tech are the start of an electronic treasure hunt. "There is a value that would be there," eWorks CEO Mark Wilkins told CBS News. "Maybe it's a small value, but it's our job to really go through that process and evaluate each one of those components." Wilkins' team first tests to see if electronics still work. If not, they are disassembled, because anything with a chip can contain gold, and more than you might think. And it's not just the...

The U.S. military is looking into an incident on Saturday in which it lost communications with 50 long-range nuclear-armed missiles based in the northern United States. The U.S. Air Force's new Global Strike Command lost communications with the missiles for about 45 minutes, and says it immediately dispatched troops to inspect the sites. The check determined there was no damage and no evidence of sabotage. A spokesman for the command says investigators believe a faulty circuit board at a control center was to blame. The spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel John Thomas, says experts found that the same type of part failed...

Sen. Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) introduced a bill Wednesday aimed at reducing Chinese control over technology used by the Department of Defense and its contractors. The bill would require defense contractors to disclose where they obtained printed circuit boards, which are an essential component of most complex technology. "A disproportionate amount of the printed circuit boards used in the Department of Defense's electronic systems come from China, where they are vulnerable to sabotage by the Chinese government," Hawley's office said. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have expressed concern about Chinese control of important supply chains. Democratic senators Bob...

SNIPPET: "BANGKOK – SNIPPET: "Police said a charred body recovered from the badly damaged building in Nonthaburi province, just north of Bangkok, probably is Samai Wongsuwan..."
