The 1992 McDonald’s coffee lawsuit (Liebeck v. McDonald’s) involved Stella Liebeck, who suffered severe third-degree burns from scalding hot coffee, leading to a jury awarding her $2.9 million (later reduced and settled), not for cheap slacks, but for extensive medical bills and pain, as McDonald’s knew its coffee was dangerously hot (around 180-190°F) and had faced 700+ prior burn complaints, with punitive damages reflecting their indifference, making it a landmark case against corporate responsibility, not a frivolous suit over minor damage.
If memory serves, I believe she attempted to get reimpursement without a lawsuit and McDonlad’s declined.
Also, I believe the verdict or damages were appealed and they ending up settling this for less than half-a-million dollars. The PR damage was probably much higher.
