Rand Paul says partisan gerrymandering 'might lead to violence in our country'

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said Sunday that partisan gerrymandering will “lead to more civil tension and possibly more violence in our country,” urging restraint in the ongoing redistricting wars playing out in more than a dozen states.

“I think there is the potential that when people have no representation, that they feel disenfranchised, that it can lead, it might lead to violence in our country,” Paul said in an interview with Kristen Welker on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Paul’s warning comes as state lawmakers across the country consider redrawing congressional lines at the insistence of President Donald Trump, with Democratic-led states like Virginia and Maryland weighing mid-cycle redistricting to counter GOP gains in Texas, Missouri and North Carolina.

The Kentucky Republican predicted that eliminating minority seats in Congress could lead to voters feeling disenfranchised and empowering them to “resort to other means.”

“I’m concerned if there are no representatives, like no Republican representatives in California or no Democrats in Texas, that it will be so thoroughly one-sided that people will feel like their vote isn’t counting,” Paul said, adding: “It’s a mistake of both parties.”

Some of you have suggested Rand is leader of the opposition. It's interesting and unusual how he has positioned himself.

He'll benefit if things turn sour. He's betting on it I think with his opposition on a range of issues.

A good play for '28 perhaps. Only time will tell.

It’s time for Rand Paul to retire. He is not a reliable conservative.

Put together guilty of violence in prison.

Prisoners don’t get to vote.

It’s risky what he’s doing

He’s probably not running for Senate again?

Well if a bunch of republican states choose to redraw congressional districts in a perfectly legal way and some nutters go violent, then they hopefully meet with opposing violence.

During this time, there are two sides, pick one! Being in the middle is not an option here. We don’t have that luxury right now!

Here in CT we have five gerrymandered Democrat congressional seats and zero Republican seats.

I have never heard Rand be concerned with our disenfranchisement.

Thanks a lot—Rand. Good to know you have our backs.

Spit.

might lead to violence in our country'

Cuz we don't have unmitigated violence going on right now, Rand? You can't be libertarian when violent 3rd world thugs, thieves and scammers have taken a large foothold in our country and are trying to push forward to take the rest of it.

Clearly he doesn’t see the lack of representation for Republican in the North East as a problem...

Gerrymandering has been going on for literally over 200 years. Paul is just waking up to it now? Why is he bringing this up now that Republicans finally - finally - are fighting back with some gerrymandering of their own? Is his position that only liberals should be able to do it? If not, then why didn’t he say this 10 years ago when California did its first big gerrymander?
