Trump expected to sign executive order to reclassify marijuana as soon as Monday, source tells CNBC; pot stocks surge

Cannabis stocks jumped on Friday as the White House prepared to significantly ease federal restrictions on marijuana.

President Donald Trump is expected to issue an executive order as soon as Monday that would allow for reclassification of weed, a source familiar with the matter told CNBC. Such a move would allow cannabis companies to fall under different tax regulations and encourage investment.

Cannabis stocks took a leg up in Friday’s midday trading following CNBC’s report.

The Washington Post first reported on Thursday that Trump was expected to use an executive order to instruct federal agencies to reclassify marijuana as a less regulated Schedule III drug from a Schedule I. Axios reported the potential reclassification of pot — out of a group that includes heroin and into a lower tier of less dangerous drugs, such as steroids and Tylenol with codeine — would take place early next year.

Trump previously floated a change in marijuana’s classification in August.

″Trump rescheduling marijuana was not an if, in our assessment, but a when,” Ed Groshans of Compass Point,.

If Trump orders cannabis to be rescheduled, Groshans anticipates the Drug Enforcement Administration would finalize a proposed rule for the reclassification by the summer.

Bill Kirk, senior research analyst at Roth, said he’s also monitoring whether the Supreme Court decides next week to hear a case on state regulations and federal prohibition of cannabis. A positive ruling for the industry in that case could speed up regulatory timelines.

The industry sees the latest moves as a sign of progress to normalize pot under national law. *** “This the beginning of a new era of public health policy,” Hauser said. “If implemented, it dismantles nearly a century of outdated drug policies that fly in the face of science and medicine.”

And just like that, weed is now a conservative value.

I’m actually okay with this. Alcohol is far more damaging to society, both individually and broadly.

Yep. I detest marijuana, but we have to weigh the costs of prohibition against the benefits.

I have been telling people around this place since 2017 that Trump is a populist, not a conservative.

Weed reclassification is a populist/libertarian ideal.

Populism is great when it elects someone who aligns most of the time with our platform.

I’ve always struggled with this issue.

All recreational drugs are extremely dangerous and destructive in one way or the other.

But the entire Deep State that has grown around fighting the “War on Drugs” is extremely dangerous against normal people, as it can be turned against the People very easily. The USA saw that with the government abuses following January 6.

It’s a question of “which is more evil”?

Reasonable minds can differ on the answer to that question.

Contrary to popular belief, most weed sold is sold illegally on the black market. Tax and regulation puts legal weed sellers at a big financial disadvantage. Cartels and corner drug dealers will not be happy with this.

Now, who’s that jackwagon attorney that sued big tobacco over the fictional second hand smoke dangers? What about those who face workplace drug testing and a contact high from second hand weed smoke?

I have never bought into the argument that because alcohol does a lot of damage, we ought to encourage the use of some different substance that also causes damage just in different ways.

The fact is that weed is *terrible* for mental health. Believe me, I live in San Francisco which likely has among the highest per-capita use of this stupid drug in the country. I can’t walk down any street without some walking past some psychotic street person who’s toking it up. Emergency rooms are full of teens having psychiatric episodes due to vaping THC all day. This is bad for America. If Trump is really doing this, it sucks... and it’ll be a black mark on his legacy.

“Both have major problems—dangerous drivers is one of the big ones.”

Quite true.

But whenever I watch the Cops-type shows on TV, they ALWAYS force a roadside sobriety test or breathalyzer when they think a driver may be drunk. That’s fine.

But:

Of the million times they’ve pulled someone over who reeks of marijuana, I have NEVER seen any kind of sobriety test done, and the perp gets to drive off as long as there is nothing else illegal going on.
