President Trump lodged an eye-watering $10 billion lawsuit against the BBC on Monday, accusing the British broadcaster of defaming him through a deceptive edit of his Jan. 6, 2021, speech at the White House Ellipse.
The lawsuit took aim at a 2024 documentary by the BBC, which spliced different sections of Trump’s comments before his supporters ransacked the Capitol to make it appear as though he explicitly encouraged the riot.
“I’m suing the BBC for putting words in my mouth, literally,” Trump grumbled to reporters earlier in the day, Monday. “They actually put terrible words in my mouth having to do with January 6th that I didn’t say
Trump’s legal team filed the 33-page lawsuit in a federal court in Miami, blasting the BBC’s documentary ***as “a brazen attempt to interfere in and influence” the 2024 election. *** Last month, the BBC issued a formal apology, but insisted that it did not defame Trump. The BBC’s director-general and news CEO both stepped down last month. BBC chairman Samir Shah described the edit as an “error of judgment.”
The controversial documentary featured an edited clip of Trump telling rally-goers: “We’re gonna walk down to the Capitol and I’ll be there with you and we fight. We fight like hell, and if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not gonna have a country anymore.”
But that clip was an edit of three different sections of Trump’s speech and cut out a nearly hour-long gap to make all that appear as one sentence. Among the portions left out was Trump’s plea to fight “peacefully.” Additionally, the BBC documentary took footage of the Proud Boys en route to the Capitol before Trump’s address and made it appear that they were inspired to march over after his remarks at the White House Ellipse.

None of that stopped Trump from winning millions from ABC and CBS.
This was a deliberate calculated attempt by the BBC to deceive the public and paint Trump as a guy that organized a riot; which is exact opposite of what he did.
I’d say an eventual settlement of a few tens of millions.
I too doubt he will win. But that is not the point of the lawsuit. in my opinion. First, it brings attention to the manipulation of the words of his speech. Second, it scares other news media and helps prevent this from happening again. Third, it turns the narrative that the media keeps presenting from lies back to the truth, this helps trump in future media conflicts.
“Lack of standing, jurisdiction, and improper venue as well as Trump being a public figure will make this a difficult case to win.”
_________
He has standing, as it is him the BBC defamed in a “documentary” no less. This wasn’t an editorial or opinion piece.
Jurisdiction/venue:
Trump is a citizen and resident of Florida.
Presence in the U.S.: The BBC is a large organization with operations and an office in the U.S., including in Florida.
Availability of Content:
The contested documentary, which originally aired in the UK in October 2024, was reportedly available to U.S. viewers through the BritBox streaming service and social media circulation, including to audiences in Florida.
Producer Activity:
BBC producers traveled to Florida to conduct research and film portions of the documentary, which Trump’s team argues establishes a connection to the state sufficient for jurisdiction.
God be with you, President Trump. Amen.
Daddy Donald - Go big or go home.
On the plus side, as the facts get known, it will do untold damage to the BBC, even if Trump doesnt get a dime from it.
Godspeed and all luck with you in this endeavor, sir!
BBC Assets and intellectual properties moved to Truth Social.

YouTuber and Brit, BlackBeltBarrister, disagrees.
Check out his channel.
He’ll take you through it. :-)
Sue the porst next for calling our President action “grumble”.

Plus, the fact that the BBC is a government broadcasting agency.
They should have never even considered it (although, they are pretty much 100% communist, 100% of the time).
Unless the BBC settles it’s hard to see DJT winning this. He’s hated by many in this country and he’s almost universally hated in Britain. So regardless of where the trial takes place (US or Britain) I don’t see him winning. Perhaps he’s just doing this to make a point...a very good point.
I’ve seen his videos. He’s very good. Although I’ve never been sure I suspect he might be politically conservative.
See ny reply #9.
The POTUS knows what he’s doing.
His BlackBeltSecrets channel is also worth the watch.
“He’s hated by many in this country”
He’s “hated” so much he won 77.3 million votes and all 7 swing states?
That much “hate”?
The trial is in Florida which Trump overwhelmingly won.
I wouldn’t be so confident if I were you.
The headline is misleading since there's already a compulsory boob tube tax to fund the Beeb.
What the story makes clear is that the BBC wants people already paying to pay even more...
Note to the UK: Past time for you lot to have your own tea party. In this case TV party..
Pessimism is the lowest form of intelligence.
Defamation can be filed in any jurisdiction and venue where publication occurred and in the judicial district of the plaintiff or the defendant. Actual malaice is obviously present so public figure obstacle overcome.
I don’t see the problem.
