A popular Big Sur hiking trail has reopened after damage from severe storms forced it to close. The Pine Ridge Trail is located at the Big Sur Station just south of the main entrance to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Par. The more than 20-mile trail goes from Pfeiffer Big Sur to China Camp, deep into U.S. Forest Service land. The trail was closed following storm damage, which saw washouts and toppled trees along the Central Coast. This trail is extremely popular on weekends and holidays when backpackers are drawn to Sykes Hot Springs.

Monterey County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team members and a California State Park ranger located two lost hikers in the backcountry of Big Sur. The sheriff's department says the two-day hikers became lost when they crossed multiple creeks and rivers as darkness set in. Neither hiker had a flashlight and was using their cell phone lights to see the trail. During their hike, one of their phone's died and the other had low power. The man who started the 2020 Dolan Fire in Big Sur was sentenced to prison on Wednesday. Ivan Geronimo Gomez was found guilty of 16 felonies including arson, marijuana cultivation, injury to a firefighter and animal cruelty in April. Gomez was sentenced to 24 years in state prison. The Dolan Fire eventually destroyed 128,050 acres and 14 structures and may have killed 11 endangered condors. More than a dozen firefighters were injured, one critically, when they had to deploy their emergency fire shelters.

On Thursday, Cal Fire released video of the Colorado Fire burn scar as seen from the air. As of Saturday morning, Cal Fire reports that the Colorado Fire, which is burning on the Big Sur coast, is 85% contained and has burned 700 acres. They expect it to be fully contained as of Feb. 2. Flames from the Colorado Fire, the uncommon winter wildfire on the Big Sur coast, continued burning the hills and canyons along curvaceous Highway 1 and near the famous Bixby Bridge. Whipped by strong winds over the weekend, the fire consumed a hillside near the bridge and neared its approach, Saturday according to dramatic nighttime photographs and reports. Update: The highway was reopened at 8:20 a.m. A rockslide has closed a section of Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast. Caltrans said the rockslide is near the Anderson Canyon Bridge, which is between Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and the Esalen Institute. Crews are on scene, the agency said. Caltrans does not have an estimate for when Highway 1 will reopen. This rockslide comes after Caltrans reopened the Highway on Wednesday between Deetjen's Big Sur Inn and Ragged Point. The highway was closed Dec. 12 in support of a Monterey County evacuation warning.

Caltrans is on the scene of a rock slide on Highway 1 at Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County. A Navy Hospital Corpsman died in a hiking accident in Big Sur on Wednesday, Sept. 22. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office said the victim was 22-year-old Marie Denea Ishie of San Diego. Ventana Big Sur set a record for the highest per-room sale price when it sold to Hyatt Hotel Group. The $148 million sale comes out to $2.5 million per room, beating the record set in April in Sonoma when Montage Healdsburg sold for $2.04 million. The hotel is located on a 162-acre property in Big Sur and has 59 rooms, 15 cabins and 63 camping sites. According to SFGate, Ventana Big Sur rooms start at $2,000 a night.

A group of firefighting monks was ready to defend a Buddhist monastery being threatened Tuesday by a wildfire burning in the rugged central coast mountains south of Big Sur. A section of Highway 1 in Big Sur has disappeared. One lane of the highway was struck by debris flow and washed away, Caltrans reported. The road continues to erode as debris and water continues to flow down off the Big Sur mountains. According to Big Sur Fire, the section of highway is located at Rat Creek, south of Esalen and north of Big Creek. Caltrans crews will be out at the damaged section of road Friday morning to fully assess the damage.

BIG SUR, Calif. — Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge in Big Sur is starting to fail. According to CalTrans an active slide has been taking place on the mountainside under the bridge since Saturday. The slide is moving one of two column holding the bridge up and cracks are visible at the top of the post. "Basically the mountainside that it is sitting on is moving, which, causes the column to move," said Heath Johnston with CalTrans.
