A section of Highway 1 in Big Sur has disappeared.
One lane of the highway was struck by debris flow and washed away, Caltrans reported. The road continues to erode as debris and water continues to flow down off the Big Sur mountains.
According to Big Sur Fire, the section of highway is located at Rat Creek, south of Esalen and north of Big Creek.
Caltrans crews will be out at the damaged section of road Friday morning to fully assess the damage.
Isn’t that in California?
Take that road trip off my bucket list.
Back in the 60’s everyone thought California was going to drop off into the ocean. I see it’s finally happening one piece at a time.
Used to be a nice drive in my ‘56 Porsche Speedster, back in the late-70s.
yes its not really news
I would try to do it sometime. It’s amazing - one of God’s fantastic creations.
So is Jennifer Love Hewitt but i digress
Steely Dan was right.
“California tumbles into the sea...”
“Isn’t that in California?”
It was. ...
. Yes, as opposed to Rte 1 which featured so prominently in “It Happened One Night” but is now mostly a nightmare with small sections of “well that’s not too bad”.
Porsche Speedster!!! Never owned a Speedster but had two 1959 Covertible Ds. Love my 230 SLC but wish I had one of those back. Decades ago a friend had a Carrera Speedster. Amazing machine.
You didn’t listen closely enough. He is saying that is the only reason that he would go back to Annandale-on-the-Hudson, to Bard College, if it ever happened.
Does California DOT pack sand back in the hole, dig out more of the hill to move the road in further, or build a bridge?
That’s bad.
Well, I hear the whistle but I can’t go...
It is a start.

Now Medium Sur.
Cal Hwy 1 & Blue Ridge Pkwy are the two greatest drives in North America. IMHO.
