Isn’t that in California?
Back in the 60’s everyone thought California was going to drop off into the ocean. I see it’s finally happening one piece at a time.
Used to be a nice drive in my ‘56 Porsche Speedster, back in the late-70s.
yes its not really news
Steely Dan was right.
“California tumbles into the sea...”
Does California DOT pack sand back in the hole, dig out more of the hill to move the road in further, or build a bridge?
It is a start.
The road continues to erode as debris and water continues to flow down off the Big Sur mountains.

Now Medium Sur.
Cal Hwy 1 & Blue Ridge Pkwy are the two greatest drives in North America. IMHO.
This is a result of tremendous inland forest fires a few years back that stripped a lot of the mountains. Too bad. I was lucky enough to hike up to the Big Sur River in early 1971 and it was God’s beautiful country.
It seems like something like this happened every time it rains there.
We have been in Calif. for 50+ years and it happens about every big rainy spell.
The isolated people also lose their electrical power. Often they cook all of their thawed meat and seafood to have a long lasting cookout for the neighbors.
We drove CA Hwy101/1 from San Diego to Vancouver on our honeymoon trip. Stopped at most tourist traps like Hearst Castle, Carmel, a big aquarium whose name escapes me, and on and on. Got to Vancouver in time to attend their mini-World’s Fair. Had a blast. Today CA is heading for the crapper just about as fast as the commies that run the place can push. Too bad.
Oh yeah ... if you are a CA liberal and want to move to Texas, I strongly advise that you don’t. Moving to Texas and then expecting Texans to tolerate and acquisce to your
lefty ways will not end good for you.
I spent a year in Big Sur. The best job you could get there was working on the highway crew, as chunks of highway frequently fell into the ocean during rainy season. And many mornings, we’d wake up to find that someone had “gone over the edge.”
I lived on top of a tall ridge. Had a little VW, best car to have there. I remember driving down the road one day...I wasn’t pressing the accelerator, just sliding down with the mud. Quite an adventure—best year of my life.
I knew it.
Was telling everyone this weekend would be nice to drive down the coast to SLO or Cambria for a bite at one of my favorite restaurants.
Now, I have to take 101 which is not so scenic...
I have driven that road many time over the years. Very scenic, and very dangerous.
Looks like folks here wouldn’t like driving over passes on ice in CO to go to work every day. ...sliding around those switchbacks and going downhill 70 mph on the less curvy parts. ;)
Drove down that stretch of road a few weeks ago. The fire this summer made this almost inevitable.
Nothing new, I believe an even larger piece of highway go bye-bye happened in that area 3 or so years ago. Normal.
