A section of Highway 1 in Big Sur has disappeared.

One lane of the highway was struck by debris flow and washed away, Caltrans reported. The road continues to erode as debris and water continues to flow down off the Big Sur mountains.

According to Big Sur Fire, the section of highway is located at Rat Creek, south of Esalen and north of Big Creek.

Caltrans crews will be out at the damaged section of road Friday morning to fully assess the damage.

I grew up in the mountains and even put a car part way down a mountainside, but I wouldn’t drive that road on a bet. I had trees to stop me fifty yards down.

This is a result of tremendous inland forest fires a few years back that stripped a lot of the mountains. Too bad. I was lucky enough to hike up to the Big Sur River in early 1971 and it was God’s beautiful country.

It seems like something like this happened every time it rains there.

We have been in Calif. for 50+ years and it happens about every big rainy spell.

The isolated people also lose their electrical power. Often they cook all of their thawed meat and seafood to have a long lasting cookout for the neighbors.

It is so worthy of a drive. It has almost one washout that is big enough to take out a section of Highway 1 every Winter.

If you do try it, drive it heading north instead of south. The southern lanes are on the ocean side, so they are inheritable more dangerous. I have driven it numerous times, including pulling a trailer, but I have only driven it once in going in the southbound direction and I was not towing a trailer.

We drove CA Hwy101/1 from San Diego to Vancouver on our honeymoon trip. Stopped at most tourist traps like Hearst Castle, Carmel, a big aquarium whose name escapes me, and on and on. Got to Vancouver in time to attend their mini-World’s Fair. Had a blast. Today CA is heading for the crapper just about as fast as the commies that run the place can push. Too bad.

Oh yeah ... if you are a CA liberal and want to move to Texas, I strongly advise that you don’t. Moving to Texas and then expecting Texans to tolerate and acquisce to your
lefty ways will not end good for you.

I don’t think I’d walk down that road, let alone drive.

They are renaming Texas, to "New California."

All of the above to do the job.

Their construction project managers of all ilkes have been checking out the damage and surrounding the damage. They will wait until it quits raining to determine what to do and when.

Take that road trip off my bucket list.

It has been off our go by list for about a decade.

I spent a year in Big Sur. The best job you could get there was working on the highway crew, as chunks of highway frequently fell into the ocean during rainy season. And many mornings, we’d wake up to find that someone had “gone over the edge.”

I lived on top of a tall ridge. Had a little VW, best car to have there. I remember driving down the road one day...I wasn’t pressing the accelerator, just sliding down with the mud. Quite an adventure—best year of my life.

I knew it.

Was telling everyone this weekend would be nice to drive down the coast to SLO or Cambria for a bite at one of my favorite restaurants.

Now, I have to take 101 which is not so scenic...

The weekend before last was the best in Big Sur.

You could still go down to Nepenthe, or one of the other places, and come back.
