Monterey County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team members and a California State Park ranger located two lost hikers in the backcountry of Big Sur.
The sheriff's department says the two-day hikers became lost when they crossed multiple creeks and rivers as darkness set in.
Neither hiker had a flashlight and was using their cell phone lights to see the trail.
During their hike, one of their phone's died and the other had low power.
The sheriff's department said they reached a spot with some cell service and were able to call for help.
Their location was confirmed, and they were told to stay in place and seek shelter from the weather in nearby trees.
The hikers were soaked from the river crossings and continued to get doused from the rain.
Rescue crews took extra flashlights and clothing and located the hikers and guided them out of the backcountry.
The hikers were freezing and soaked due to the rain but stated they did not want medical attention.
Dumbass hikers.
Stupid should hurt.
Be Prepared.
Cell phones have GPS and Maps [as long as they have coverage].
Because the middle of winter is such a great time for a long outing
They went hiking and used their only means of communication as a flashlight. They came close to getting a Darwin award.
Wait till they see the bill.
Battery operated flashlights are so 1899.
There are quite a few apps with which you can download the maps for use when not in service.
Does no one know how to use a compass and a (gasp) map? Don’t they know better than to get out of the woods by dark? Or at least take a real flashlight and make sure their phones are charged? geez.
Peopl who live on a screen somewhere.
If you go prepared.
Appropriate clothing, knife, lighting, a way to make a fire if needed, the firearm of your choice and extra ammo.
Sounds like they had none of the basics.
Not a bad time if ones knows what they are doing.
I have spent many a winter day hiking miles from a road.
Often in well below zero temperatures.
The best thing about it really cuts back on the number of people out and about.
I carry those things when I go hiking or hunting, along with a space blanket and some parachute cord. What I don’t bother to take along is a cell phone.
Ten essentials including a mechanical compass and map.
I did a backpack trek with a guy who assured me he had the trail map.
He did. On his Apple Watch. It didn’t go well
I check in at night to make sure the homestead is still standing and tell them that all my limbs are still attached.
Otherwise they worry

In Big Sur it is

And crossing rivers in cold weather is a great idea.
