Rockslide Closes Highway 1 in Big Sur
KSBW ^ | Dec 16, 2021 | David Aguilar

Update: The highway was reopened at 8:20 a.m.

A rockslide has closed a section of Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast.

Caltrans said the rockslide is near the Anderson Canyon Bridge, which is between Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and the Esalen Institute.

Crews are on scene, the agency said.

Caltrans does not have an estimate for when Highway 1 will reopen.

This rockslide comes after Caltrans reopened the Highway on Wednesday between Deetjen's Big Sur Inn and Ragged Point. The highway was closed Dec. 12 in support of a Monterey County evacuation warning.

With any luck, the rest of the state will break off and fall in the ocean.

A gorgeous stretch along the coast. If a person only wanted to visit one place in California to see the natural beauty and then get the heck out, Big Sur would be an excellent candidate.

Highway 1 presents a beautiful scenic drive, but the geology of the coastal mountains and hills along it is very unstable.

Weather conditions, like rain in particular, and merely the erosion that comes with time, constantly wear down the coastal mountains and hills and frequently enough with disastrous displays.

I swear David Aguilar was reporting 40 years ago when I lived out there.

That road is tough on bikers because cars cross the line around those curves.

Was on the scene of just such a fatal accident.

I guess California has officially gone from Rioting to Mudslide season.

Agree. My wife and I have driven the LA to Monterey US1 twice in the last few years in our convertible Mustang with the top down. Pretty sweet!

It's a great 30 mph road - filled with guys in small, late-model BMW convertibles going 55.

In the 70's it was the station wagons crossing the line.

In addition to the one I referenced on Highway 1, I lost a friend on San Marcos Pass (254?) the same way.

LOL. Every time we'd pass by one of those signs while driving in the car, my Dad would always say, "What! Haven't they caught that Indian yet?"
