The blast at a Texas oil refinery early Thursday will probably push already high gasoline prices even higher — although not immediately. The blast and resulting fire at the ExxonMobil plant in the Houston-area city of Baytown, Texas, injured at least four workers. The accident could hamper output at one of America’s largest refineries for months, weighing on gasoline supply at at time when US refining capacity has already been reduced, said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst for the Oil Price Information Service. “They’re not going to have all systems go for a couple of quarters,” he said. The average...

The dozen or so cranes visible from Interstate 10 in Baytown will only remain for a few more months as Chevron Phillips Chemical's $6 billion petrochemical expansion moves toward completion. Chevron Phillips' complex is more than 80 percent complete, although it won't be fully operational for almost another year. The project involves a massive ethane cracker - on a plot the size of 44 football fields - that will separate a component of natural gas called ethane, which will provide the feedstock for some 1.5 million metric tons a year of ethylene, a common building block of plastics. Chevron Phillips,...

Dorothy Baker-Flugence (pictured with her husband and children) of Baytown, Texas, is one tough broad! Ismael Martinez (pictured) didn’t know what he was in for when he crept inside the rear of Baker-Flugence’s unlocked van last Friday with plans of robbing she and her children at knifepoint. The suspect never fathomed that he would wind up brawling with the mom. He ended up being thrown from the vehicle, run over and then hospitalized, reports Fox News. A Baytown woman got pulled over, thinking she'd just get a ticket. Instead, she was arrested and you won't believe why. It's a story that will have you thinking twice about keeping those library books long after they're due. Making sure her eight-year-old son, Jose, is a proficient reader is important to Joanne Ibarra, so books are also important. They just might not be coming from Baytown's Sterling Library anymore. "I don't want to see them. I don't want to see any more books, not right now," laughed Ibarra. Ibarra laughs it off, but it was a serious situation that...

AUSTIN - The first of nine state constitutional amendments proposed on the Nov. 8 ballot would establish a fund through which taxpayers would help pay for relocating freight rail lines from congested urban areas. Like most of the ballot proposals, except for the ban on same-sex marriages, Proposition 1 has received little attention. But it is beginning to spark some debate and, depending on how it fares at the polls, could become an issue in the March Republican governor's primary. Proposition 1 supporters, including Gov. Rick Perry, think the new fund would be an important step toward easing traffic congestion...

…Poe currently has the advantage in the District 2 race, Gonzales said, not only because the district leans Republican but also because President George Bush will be at the top of the Republican ticket. “President Bush is going to be popular and win this district by a comfortable margin,” Gonzales said. “It’s going to be difficult for Lampson to convince a large number of Bush voters to turn around and vote for a Democrat for Congress — not impossible, but it’s tough.” To win, Lampson needs to show voters that he is independent of the national Democratic Party and can...
