Bayer Polymers Begins Production of Mondur® CD Isocyanate at its Baytown, Texas, Facility
Investment in Domestic Production Reinforces Companys Commitment as a Leading Polyurethane Raw Materials Manufacturer
February 12, 2004
Bayer Polymers now produces Mondur® CD isocyanate at its Baytown, Texas, facility.
The companys new domestic capacity is designed to address increased short- and long-term material demands in the microcellular foam and solid elastomer markets. The investment made within Baytowns MDI complex expands the sites polyurethane production capabilities for monomeric MDI isocyanates.
"The growth of our Mondur CD isocyanate material in applications such as rollerblade wheels, sport footwear, and automotive steering wheels has made this capacity investment a necessity," said Don Birnie, director of MDI product management at Bayer Polymers Americas. "The Mondur CD isocyanate production weve added at Baytown strengthens our leading polyurethane supplier position in the Americas, and compliments our global production capabilities."
Mondur CD isocyanate is an important chemical constituent in the production of polyurethane microcellular foams and elastomers. Microcellular foams, for example, are used in the manufacture of appliance handles, exercise equipment, and footwear. Elastomers find application in the automotive, electronic, and sport and recreation industries.

A Muscular Lobby Tries to Shape Nation's Bioterror Plan
Executives of the major pharmaceutical companies have been hopping trains and planes to the nation's capital, where they are staging an enormous lobbying campaign, at the highest levels of government, to help shape the nation's bioterrorist plan - and beyond.
So far, they have had some remarkable victories. While the government has struggled to make sure the nation will have enough drugs to treat biological weapons that were largely hypothetical a few months ago, drug companies have managed to stave off many actions that would harm them, like violating patents or forcing them to supply free drugs.
As that success shows, the pharmaceutical lobby, which represents the nation's biggest drug makers, from Eli Lilly to Pfizer to Merck , is both large and politically adroit and, if anything, more sophisticated than when it gained fame in the early 1990's for helping to defeat the Clinton administration health plan.
