As the campaign season entered its final weeks, the area’s two incumbent congressmen were outspending their Republican challengers by wide margins. Of course, they had more to spend — a lot more. For the quarter ending Sept. 30, Rep. Dan Maffei, D-25 of Syracuse, took in $366,805 in net contributions. Challenger Ann Marie Buerkle took in less than half of that: $147,888. In the 24th District, incumbent Democrat Mike Arcuri of Utica outraised challenger Richard Hanna by a smaller margin, $256,291 to $138,527.... 24th District While Hanna had the fundraising edge early in the campaign, Arcuri quickly regained it, and...

Washington -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi laid down the law this year: To prevent the appearance of Congress doing unethical favors for big campaign contributors, she told Democrats they could no longer steer federal money directly to corporations. The only "earmarks" members could seek in spending bills would be for nonprofits... But not everyone is obeying Pelosi’s tough talk... U.S. Reps. Dan Maffei and Michael Arcuri have found a way to work around the new orders: Simply pass the federal money to not-for-profit organizations and let them forward it to corporations.... Maffei and Arcuri accepted campaign contributions from the same...

Republican Congressional candidate Richard Hanna has raised more than $350,000 in the last eight weeks, his campaign said Saturday. Hanna, who is challenging incumbent Democrat Michael Arcuri in the 24th district, said in a press release that he was “humbled and grateful for the enormous support.” His campaign said 91 percent of the individual donations came from within the district, which includes the city of Geneva and parts of Ontario and Seneca counties. Complete first-quarter financials must be filed with the Federal Election Commission by Thursday, and Hanna’s campaign said specific figures would be available then. Arcuri spokesman Mark Cornell...

The discussion over what parliamentary procedures will be used in reconciling the House and Senate versions of healthcare legislation is a pivotal -- but not the final -- factor in the process. Reporting from Washington and Los Angeles The House Rules Committee meets Saturday morning as Democrats kick off a weekend of parliamentary maneuvering, lobbying and arm-twisting in the healthcare debate ahead of showdown votes set for Sunday. The New York State Independence Party Vice Chairman John Dote slammed Congressman Michael Arcuri and his campaign spokesperson, Jordan Karp's claims in a local newspaper of being "independent." "We feel strongly about an independent voice for the people. Mr. Arcuri has proven over the past two years that politics are more important to him than truly representing the voters of this district. The fact that he attaches his name to the word "independent," is truly misleading and frankly insulting to our party and the voters who he fooled once already. We state below some facts we considered, which ultimately led...

You can clearly tell exactly when upstate Democratic Congressman Mike Arcuri became frustrated. Just back from a 23-hour whirlwind tour of Iraq, the freshman congressman recounts a story of his meeting with Salam al-Zuwba’i, deputy prime minister of Iraq. Arcuri asked al-Zawba’i to tell him exactly how he should convince his constituents that American troops should stay in Iraq. “The problem was, he didn’t answer the question,” said Arcuri, noting that al-Zawba’i instead spoke of the numerous other issues and the sectarian strife that faces his country. “My concern there is that if he doesn’t know why we need to...

by Mark Finkelstein July 11, 2006 - 06:52 Q. When are special interest contributions not special interest contributions? A. When they're made to a Democratic candidate. And the Associated Press is reporting on the matter. No political race in my little upstate New York neck of the woods has attracted national attention in a long time - until this year. The retirement of liberal Republican Sherwood Boehlert meant an open seat in New York's 24th Congressional District. The Republicans have held the seat for many years, and continue to hold a registration edge. But in the current political climate, the...

They are Oneida County District Attorney Michael Arcuri, Utica lawyer Leon Koziol and Jeff Miller, a Utica College teacher who lost to Boehlert in 2004. Also, Les Roberts, a Democrat from Cincinnatus, Cortland County, has filed a candidate disclosure form with the Federal Election Commission, indicating his candidacy for the 24th District. Roberts lectures part time at...
