Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told The Times on Friday that he hadn’t had time to think about his next move. But he certainly sounded like someone with a job description in mind. Gov.-elect Jerry Brown will be inaugurated in less than three weeks. Still, when Schwarzenegger was asked in a meeting with Times editors and editorial writers what he planned to do once his term ends, he initially said, "There’s no rush.... It’s not like I have something in my mind." Then, asked if he would consider a post in the Obama administration, he said yes and began to riff on...

SACRAMENTO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced he will host the 2010 Summit on Health, Nutrition and Obesity: Action for Healthy Living on Wednesday, February 24, 2010. President Bill Clinton, founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation and the Governor’s co-lead in the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, will also participate. “We have made significant strides in promoting healthy eating and active living since my first Summit in 2005, but there remains action that can be done to promote a healthier California for all,” said Governor Schwarzenegger. “I am convening the 2010 Summit on Health, Nutrition and...

When the state legislature twice handed Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger a bill to legalize marriage equality in California, Schwarzenegger vetoed it both times, saying that it was an issue for the courts to sort out. Now, following voter approval of Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment that revokes the right for gay and lesbian families to marry, Schwarzenegger is repeating that sentiment. The governor went on the news program This Week With George Stephanopoulos to say that he opposes the new amendment, but he believes that the state’s Supreme Court--which found state laws barring same-sex families from marriage to be unconstitutional last...

Schwarzenegger on the State of the State By Ken Masugi Television allowed us to visualize the fight against "special interests" Governor Schwarzenegger is spoiling for. The tedious build-up he was given at his State of the State speech Wednesday night said almost all. (Sacbee audio here, under the story on the speech.) The silly Assembly Speaker Nunez, the investigated Secretary of State Shelley, the investigated President Pro Tem of the Senate Perata, the boorish, ponderous Lt. Gov. Bustamante (whom the Governor sarcastically congratulated for "his wonderful speech" introducing him), all those officials down to members of the State Board...

VIENNA, Austria -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger can expect a €1 ($1.25) birthday gift from the postal service in his home country. A stamp of that denomination honoring the Austrian-born movie star-turned-politician will be released July 30, Schwarzenegger's 57th birthday, the postal service said in a statement on its Web site. The stamp features a portrait of a serious-looking Schwarzenegger in a suit and tie in front of the U.S. and Austrian flags. It also bears his name, the word Austria in English and the number 100, signifying that it is worth 100 cents. Designed by Hannes Margreiter, the Schwarzenegger...

With the tumultuous California election just a few days away, several unassailable facts have emerged about this race that should help guide the decision-making of Golden State conservatives. First, it should be self-evident to Californians of all political persuasions that for the good of the state, it is time for Gray Davis to go. The state simply cannot afford three more years of his high-tax, high-spend (the budget went up 38 percent in his first term), anti-business policies. The budget deficit he has created is now larger than that of the other 49 states combined. The state is plunging $25...

A recall election for California's governor now seems a sure thing.

Thursday, July 10, 2003 12:01 a.m.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--Both political parties dislike the recall of Gov. Gray Davis that is now heading for the California ballot; Democrats and Republicans alike prefer stability to uncertainty. The White House is cool to the idea because it would prefer a crippled Democrat in the governor's mansion as President Bush seeks to win the state in the 2004 election. The Business Roundtable and Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce favor the devil they know and oppose the recall. The only supporters appear to be the people: 51% of people surveyed in last week's Los Angeles Times poll backed a recall, including a majority of Hispanics and a third of Democrats.

BURBANK, Calif. - Arnold Schwarzenegger (news) refuses to terminate rumors of a run for governor while promoting his latest movie, joking that: "You haven't seen special effects like this since the California state budget." Schwarzenegger's advisers have said he will decide whether to run after the July 2 release of his movie and only if it becomes clear that an effort under way to recall Gov. Gray Davis (news - web sites) will qualify for the ballot. If voters decide to oust Davis, they would also have to choose a successor. Schwarzenegger, taping "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (news...
