BIBLE MEDITATION: “And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out from this place.” Exodus 13:3 DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: Each year, Americans remember those brave-hearted souls who fought and gave their lives so that you and I would have the rights and privileges of living in a free country. Remembering is important. In fact, God instructs His people on many occasions in the Old Testament to remember from whence they came and to remember His providence. It is...

HOUSTON (BP)--Ed Young, pastor of Second Baptist Church in Houston, said former President Bill Clinton's remarks about him at the New Baptist Covenant Celebration in Atlanta earlier this month came "out of the fantasy file" and were "completely inaccurate." Clinton, during the closing session of the celebration Feb. 1, spent several minutes recounting a visit Young made to the White House in 1993 as president of the Southern Baptist Convention when Young supposedly asked Clinton, "Do you believe the Bible is literally true?" Young, in a letter to Clinton released to Baptist Press, said he was stunned to read the...

Congregation lines up in support of its pastor Appearing subdued and distraught, Steve Gaines told members of Bellevue Baptist Church Wednesday night that he'd like to remain their pastor. The embattled Gaines, under fire from some in the religious community for various controversies at the massive church, spoke to several hundred members before their usual midweek service. "The past few days have been very difficult times," said Gaines, who took over leadership of the church from the late Adrian Rogers in July 2005. "I'd really like to stay and be your pastor." Gaines' comments came after Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary...

I have been quite disturbed by your recent editorial concerning my book, Our Endangered Values [Dec. 8]. In no way did my text make any personal equation between Dr. Adrian Rogers, a great Christian leader, and the Ayatolla[h] Khomeini. My only inference was regarding my personal experiences with the rise of fundamentalism (carefully defined in the book) at about the same time in my life – approximately a quarter century ago – when our hostages were taken and the Southern Baptist Convention made a dramatic movement toward conservative leadership. Although I did not include any names in the text, I...

More than 10,000 mourners packed Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova Thursday night, paying last respects to Rev. Adrian Rogers, who died Tuesday at 74. The memorial service drew a multiracial, mulitigenerational crowd, which filled the 7,000-seat sanctuary and spilled over into rooms converted into viewing areas where large screens broadcast the service. It was a time to say goodbye to a man known to many simply as "Pastor." "He was a person of such goodness and mercy and faithfulness," said Irene Slack Speck, 86, who traveled from Indiana to attend. "I loved him with all my heart. I had to...

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Rev. Adrian Rogers, a three-time president of the Southern Baptist Convention and leader of a conservative takeover of the denomination, the nation's second largest, died early Tuesday in Memphis. He was 74. His death was announced by Baptist Press News and by Rogers' Love Worth Finding ministry. Rogers was hospitalized earlier this month with pneumonia and cancer. Rogers was elected president in 1979 as part of the conservative takeover of the 16.3 million-member convention, second in size to the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. In the years that followed, conservative leaders pushed hard against...

Adrian Rogers' death Nov. 15 prompted Southern Baptist and evangelical leaders nationwide to release statements memorializing the longtime Bellevue Baptist Church pastor and former SBC president. Among them: -- Bobby Welch, president, Southern Baptist Convention: "The flags of Christianity in general, and of Southern Baptists in particular, should be at half mast upon this occasion because few and very, very few like Dr. Adrian P. Rogers -– friend, pastor, warrior, statesman, soul winner and inspiration -- seldom arise in one generation." -- Morris H. Chapman, president, Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee: "Adrian Rogers was a model preacher, pastor, evangelist, husband...

"Shirley and I received word of the passing of our dear friend, Dr. Adrian Rogers, with heavy hearts and a sense of deep sadness. There is no one in America whom I respected more than Dr. Rogers. He has been a faithful friend to me and to the ministry of Focus on the Family for many years, serving as a voice of wisdom, encouragement and admonition on our Board of Directors. He was also a staunch ally in the battle to defend biblical values in our culture.

Rev. Adrian Rogers, pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church, said Sunday that in six months he will retire as pastor of Shelby County's largest church. Rogers made the announcement on his 73rd birthday during an evening worship service. "He said tonight that he was announcing his retirement; that he would continue to pastor for six months," said Mark Dougharty, Bellevue Baptist's associate pastor, reached later at his home. Rogers, whose home telephone number is unlisted, could not be reached for comment. Dougharty said a press conference is planned for today.
