MEMPHIS, Tennessee (AP) -- The Rev. Adrian Rogers, a three-time president of the Southern Baptist Convention and leader of a conservative takeover of the faith, died early Tuesday in Memphis. He was 74.
His death was announced by Baptist Press News and by Rogers' Love Worth Finding ministry. Officials of the Nashville-based Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee didn't immediately return calls seeking comment.
Rogers was hospitalized earlier this month with pneumonia and cancer, his ministry's Web site said.
Rogers was elected president in 1979 as part of the conservative takeover of the convention.
His election turned out to a be a watershed moment for the denomination, and the 16-million-member group shifted dramatically to the right politically and theologically.

Very sad. He was a great spiritual leader and a very good preacher.
Rest in Peace, Brother.
"Conservative takeover"? Good grief, talk about spin.
A return to sound, Biblical theology is not a takeover, it's obedience.
Conservative takeover.......take as in steal what's not rightfully yours? CNN reports are so blatantly biased it is apalling they can even call themselves journalists..........
This is from the Love Worth Finding website at www.lwf.org:
ADRIAN ROGERS
FOUNDER OF LOVE WORTH FINDING AND PASTOR EMERITUS OF BELLEVUE BAPTIST CHURCH
September 12, 1931 - November 15, 2005
Dr. Adrian Rogers, Founder of Love Worth Finding Ministries, Pastor Emeritus of Bellevue Baptist Church and a gifted man of God passed away in to the presence of the Lord early this morning after battling cancer and double pneumonia.
I imagine literally thousands who came to know Jesus because of his ministry met him at the gate as he stepped over to glory and beheld the face of Jesus.
Details are incomplete at this time, but please continue to check this web site for updates and also please continue to pray for the Rogers' family.
Noooo. Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this. Peace, my dear brother.
He is in Heaven and this I know!! I cant imagine he will run into any UMC Bishops there especially after the letter they signed in time for Veteran's Day accusing 'the administration' of going into Iraq for false reasons!!

"A return to sound, Biblical theology is not a takeover, it's obedience."
Some people are clueless on what that means.
Probably got their information from Jimmy Carter!!!!
Oh my. This is such a great loss. I streamed his sermons over my computer all the time. I'm just sick. My heart is aching.
Rest in peace Mr. Rogers.
LJ, this man was a true scholar...and saint.
