The most important aspect, if a confrontation occurs, is to have a firearm available, easily and quickly accessible. The specific caliber is less important. These updates include all the incidents we have been able to document to the date of the update after several years of intense searches. We have always sought examples of failures. We appreciate readers who help us document more cases. Here are all the cases that have been documented where .357 Magnum caliber revolvers were fired in defense against bears. These cases do not include incidents where handguns were used with other lethal means or a...

In Allen’s own words starting in the summer of 1976:In the summer of 1976, I was working alone on the grizzly bear research and was on a trip in the Scapegoat Wilderness south of the Benchmark Road end on USFS land. I was riding my saddle horse and leading two pack horses with my equipment and camping supplies. I rode into a small grassy opening suitable for horse feed north of Half Moon Peak at about dusk. I unloaded the two pack horses and turned them loose to graze with hobbles and was starting to unsaddle my riding horse. A...

The case of Crist Kolby and his probable death by a wolf was first written by W. R. Selfridge and published in 1943 in Alaskan Sportsman. It was published again in 1956 in the book Blood on the Arctic Snow and examined again in The Wolves of Alaska #ad: A Fact-based Saga by Jim Rearden, a legendary writer, scientist and historian in Alaska. This article relies on the account in Blood on the Arctic Snow, supplemented with analysis from The Wolves of Alaska and internet sources for the Ketchican Cemetary and the Thirteenth Annual Alaska Game Commission report, 1936-1937. I recently bought a Ruger GP-100 with 6 inch barrel to do shooting at the range. The previous owner installed the lightest spring (he purchased a set of 6 springs to tune the trigger and installed the lightest one) and this causes some ammo not to work since the hammer strikes not as hard. He did reloading himself with CCI primers but I wanted to buy some factory ammo to start out with before doing reloading myself since I have no experience with reloading. A friend of mine uses Magtech but he think that would not work. Do people have...

Some debates between the .357 users against the .45 ACP lovers about its place in a SHTF scenario. Most gun enthusiasts already understand the differences between the two calibers, such as the .45ACP power at close range, while the .357 performing better at longer distances. But, is it good enough for SHTF? Figuring out the logic of using one of these two calibers isn't easy. (this isn’t a scientific answer) One factor will be your location and preferences. For example someone that lives in Alaska will probably go with a .44 Magnum, but someone in Michigan would use a Ruger...

My brother recounted this interesting incident with gear that had been hanging in a closet for 30 years: Back in the late 70's Revolvers and leather duty gear was the norm. When I took my first LEO job it was with a rural department with 6 road deputies. I brought Bianchi leather duty gear, which I wore until I left that department and moved onward and upwards to a 500 man state LE agency. The state agency supplied all the necessary gear that they thought an officer needed. I went from revolver to a semi auto. In the last...

Collins, who is working on her PhD in criminal justice, is one woman you don’t want to mess with. She has proven this not just once, but twice in the past 4 months, detaining intruders on her property until police could arrive with her handy .357 Magnum. Despite the fact that her home has been the target of theft numerous times in the past, Collins is staying put. “I’m not moving. This is my home. I will continue to protect my...

Shooting sports are one of those sports that here in Texas can be year-round. Rain does not seem to slow down outdoor shooters unless there is lightning and common sense dictates the action get indoors as soon as possible. Handgunners have the best of all worlds here in Montgomery County in they can either go out FM 2854 West of Loop 336 West and shoot outdoors, under cover, at the Gum Emporium of The Conroe Shooting Center, or they can go to the Shooters Station out Highway 105 West and take advantage of their indoor range. Therefore handgunners can participate...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Metro police said the victim of a home invasion turned the tides on his intruder. Rather than running, the homeowner shot the burglar. John Lewis is sick and tired of being the victim. He said burglars have broken into his home four times this year. Lewis said it was about time the suspect got the raw end of the deal. "You got to be able to protect yourself," he said. To a thief, Lewis may look like an easy target. On Sunday, the 69-year-old Air Force veteran shot a hole through that reputation. "I mean I'm not...

MANCHESTER – A 19-year-old man accidentally killed himself Monday night while playing a game of Russian roulette with a .357 magnum revolver. Instead, his father received a telephone call telling...

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. (AP) - Douglas County investigators Monday identified a man who was shot and killed by a homeowner after trying to force his way into a Gardnerville residence. An autopsy determined Walter Francis Hetrick, 40, of Antioch, Calif., died of a severed femoral artery caused by a gunshot wound, the sheriff's office said. According to investigators, the homeowner on Log Cabin Road called 911 at 11:24 p.m. Saturday, saying someone was trying to force his way into the home. The caller also told dispatchers that the homeowner was armed, authorities said. A minute later, several shots were fired from...

'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired. Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level. He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum. The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet. If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell...
