Liberal Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson on Wednesday compared efforts to draw congressional districts along racial lines to the way disabled people were granted easier access to buildings after the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law. “The idea in Section 2 [of the Voting Rights Act] is that we are responding to current-day manifestations of past and present decisions that disadvantage minorities and make it so that they don’t have equal access to the voting system, right?” Jackson said, as she questioned a lawyer representing Louisiana voters who argued that the court-ordered creation of a second majority-black district...

Residents living across a huge area spanning three states have been warned of dangerous air pollution levels on Tuesday. Swathes of Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin are all affected by poor air quality, with an area around Minneapolis covered by one of the most severe warnings. Smoke from wildfires, combined with the current weather conditions, have contributed to the pollution. Why It Matters Health officials warn that vulnerable populations — such as children, older adults and individuals with existing respiratory issues — face heightened risks during periods of poor air quality. Even healthy members of the general public may experience health...

Every Memorial Day, Americans honor those who died serving this country. But year after year, that same weekend also plays host to something else: a disturbing and growing trend of chaos and violence at large black gatherings. While the media races to spotlight any incident involving white conservatives, they seem to always look the other way when violence breaks out at black events. It’s as if acknowledging the pattern would ruin their finely crafted narrative that “whitey” is destroying democracy. But sadly, this Memorial Day was a bloody mess for many people. From a shootout on a docked charter boat...

The U.S. economy shrank in the first quarter despite underlying strength in consumer and business spending. Gross domestic product contracted at an annualized rate of 0.3 percent, the Department of Commerce said on Wednesday. The decline in U.S. gross domestic product marks a sharp reversal from the 2.4 percent growth rate recorded at the end of last year. This was the lowest rate of growth since 2022, when the economy avoided an official recession but contracted for two consecutive quarters. Final sales to private domestic purchasers, a closely watched measure of business and consumer health, expanded at a healthy pace...

We are living through what is being called the silver tsunami. According to Legal Jobs, “about 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 each day, and the entire generation is expected to reach retirement age by 2030.” While many people spend their working years aiming to eventually retire, there are reasons why complete retirement should not be a primary goal. For my book, Leading with Wisdom: Sage Advice from 100 Experts, I interviewed more than 100 top authorities about leadership and life. A recurring theme during these conversations was the idea that complete and total retirement should not be anyone’s end goal....

F. QUESTIONS ABOUT THE “END OF THE AGE” AND “LAST DAYS” — 1. In such passages as Matthew 13:39-40; 13:49; 24:3; 28:20; etc., isn’t Jesus referring to the end of an age (Greek aion) rather than the end of the world (Greek kosmos)? In other words, if the author was talking about the end of the world, wouldn’t he have used kosmos when he actually used aion? 2. The “time of the end” mentioned in Daniel 12:1-13 was to be when the burnt offering was taken away. Since burnt offerings ended in AD 70, must not this be the timeline,...

An open letter from Artists for Palestine UK, signed by more than 3,000 actors, artists and musicians, is being criticized for its tone deaf condemnation of Israel and complete omission of the Hamas terrorist attacks which targeted civilians. The letter claims Israeli airstrikes and the government’s decision to cut off food, water and fuel to the region amounted to “war crimes,” but of the slaughter of babies and elderly at the hands of Hamas terrorists, apparently not so much. THE LETTER IN FULL: “We are witnessing a crime and a catastrophe. Israel has reduced much of Gaza to rubble, and...
