WASHINGTON (AP) -- American lawyers have been thrown into the battle against terror by government decisions on custody of suspects, special tribunals and other actions some consider constitutionally suspect. The American Bar Association is commissioning its first paid advertising campaign, starting in major newspapers July 8, to promote the Constitution itself. ``We as a profession have really been in the focus, in the middle of public debate,'' said Robert Hirshon, president of the American Bar Association. Hirshon said the $2.5 million, 13-month effort is meant to get people talking about controversies that arise in a democratic society fighting terror. ``The...

A web site with ties to the Democratic Party and ex-President Bill Clinton is charging that President Bush is most likely "personally and directly responsible for the deaths of 37 passengers and 7 crew members on Flight 93," claiming that evidence shows Bush and Vice President Cheney ordered the plane shot down on 9-11. The left-wing web site Democrats.com goes so far as to contend that the famous photo depicting President Bush talking on the phone that morning aboard Air Force One was likely taken as Bush was authorizing Cheney to give the order to have Flight 93 blown from...

Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson (D-Culver City) said the anti-secession message will be spread to black voters from churches and union halls. The campaign will also register African Americans to vote so they can be a force in the secession elections Nov. 5, he said.Click the story link to...

GHAZNI, Afghanistan (AP) -- At night Maulvi Ehsanullah, once a senior inspector with the Taliban's defense ministry, slips out of his village and sleeps in the black slate mountains that loom nearby. ``He is very nervous. He doesn't know who is looking for him,'' says Mohammed Hashim, a neighbor. Last week a villager turned over a cache of weapons to the authorities. They had belonged to Ehsanullah. ``We give our weapons when they ask for them and then they want money. If we don't give them money they say we are al-Qaida and put us in jail,'' Hashim says of...

America Desperately Needs a Congress United Behind President Bush !! Back to News/Home Page News Archives Arthur Larsen Bush Country played a very important role in mobilizing public opinion for President Bush during the recount follies of the 2000 election. Since the tragic events of 9/11, a large majority of Americans have come to appreciate having a president capable of leading America through a time of troubles, and to appreciate the high caliber of those who have been chosen for the top positions in the executive branch. The contrast with Bill Clinton and his appointees is the difference...

A proposed constitutional amendment aimed at strengthening California's open government laws picked up steam Friday, winning unanimous state Senate approval. The measure still faces significant opposition as it moves to the Assembly. It must be passed by a two-thirds margin in both houses before it is placed on the ballot. It's unclear whether backers of the amendment can move it though the Legislature fast enough to get it on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Three hundred and sixty nine days after President George W. Bush nominated two people to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals who have not been given a hearing by Democratic Senators, two senior 9th Circuit judges ruled that the words “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance are unconstitutional. The Democrats have won a victory, won a Pyrrhic victory, a victory at too great a cost, perhaps. Judging from the public outrage, and from the massive whining from most elected Democrats, the two judges, one a 79-year-old “senior status” judge and another a flaming septuagenarian liberal who is the husband...

For the last week I have had problems with how slow FR main pages (News/General/etc) are loading, and loading with NO side-bar. Additionally, when I use the refresh feature with any of the main pages, over 50% of the time the software freezes and I have to close the site using Control/Alt/Delete function as it is unresponsive to normal exiting. I have Windows 98SE, IE v.6.0.26. My system is defragged, Temp files deleted, and cookies deleted. I have uninstalled Pop-Ad Stopper recently installed (thinking that might be the problem) but am still using a recent installation of Ad-Aware. Has anyone...

After high school senior Michael Holloman refused to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, raising his fist defiantly in the air, the principal gave him two choices: detention or corporal punishment. Holloman chose the paddle. His father chose to file suit. The Alabama student's case was argued Friday before the federal appeals court in Atlanta, just days after the appeals court in San Francisco declared the Pledge unconstitutional because it contains the words "one nation, under God." But that wasn't the issue before the Atlanta appeals court on Friday. Instead, the three-judge panel was asked to decide whether schools have the...

A Cross to Bear 06/16/02Tom Breckenridge and David Briggs The Plain Dealer Most Catholics are shocked and angry about the church's sex abuse scandal. But in some Cleveland diocese parishes, the revelations are particularly troubling. At least eight parishes have had more than one of their priests accused of sexual abuse. At Holy Family in Stow, reeling congregants have learned that three priests who served the church during the 1970s had been accused of abusing minors. Even worse, they have lost their "Father Joe" - the Reverend Joseph Lieberth, 60, parish pastor - to suspension for alleged abuse...

On June 27th, the House of Representatives passed a resolution by 416-3 to protest the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional. The three no votes were cast by Democrats. Additionally, 11 other members voted "present" rather than support the pledge. All of them are Democrats. Anyone want to tell me again that there's no difference between the parties? Michael M. Bates: My Side of the Swamp

WASHINGTON, June 29 — President Bush, striving to shield himself from public anger over recent corporate scandals, called on Saturday for rules and laws to “restore faith in the integrity of American business.” Speaking in his weekly radio address, the president promised not to let an unethical few in corporate America “tarnish our entire free enterprise system.” Bush defended his administration and the Republican Party against Democratic criticism that their laissez-faire attitude toward business has helped create the problems. “Despite recent abuses of the public’s trust, our economy remains fundamentally sound and strong,” Bush said in his weekly radio address....

A federal judge temporarily blocked a controversial California law three days before it would have required the credit-card industry to warn customers that routinely paying only monthly minimums can be hazardous to their wealth.

Although he scolded the bankers Friday for waiting until late May to file suit, Judge Frank C. Damrell of U.S. District Court in Sacramento shelved the law until a hearing Nov. 8, saying he wanted both sides to provide more evidence about the industry's costs and the consumer's benefits. The law was scheduled to take effect Monday.

Home Depot has done an about-face on its policy of not doing business with the federal government. The Atlanta-based home improvement giant announced late Friday that it's now willing to become a federal contractor, paperwork and all. The sudden change of heart comes less than two weeks after Home Depot insisted it couldn't handle federal reporting requirements.Home Depot whipped up a national stir recently after it sent a memo to 1,300 stores nationwide reminding managers they should not accept purchase orders, credit cards or cash for products being bought for federal government use. Home Depot said the memo was reiterating...
