Welcome to FReeoples Bar & Grill This thread began in the summer of 2001 when a core group of aggrieved refugees set sail from their old home and washed ashore here at Free Republic, the Ellis Island of cyberspace for those who truly cherish the Constitution. But what began as a mere port-of-entry has since evolved, thanks to the hands extended by so many veteran FReepers, into a true FRiendship Society. Yet immigrants everywhere must soon find a niche from which to develop as citizens. And so it seemed only natural that we should delve into entrepreneurship by opening ...

Another U.S. Citizen Held in China By ERIK ECKHOLM BEIJING, Sept. 7 — A 66-year-old naturalized American citizen has been imprisoned here for the last 18 months on suspicion of gathering state secrets, his relatives and American officials revealed today. In violation of Chinese legal procedure, the man — Fong Fuming an electrical engineer from West Orange, N.J. — has still not been formally indicted. And for most of his incarceration, his family says, Mr. Fong has been subjected to a gratuitous torment: he has been deprived of his badly needed eyeglasses and hearing aid. The case of Mr. Fong ...

Commentary: Leading indicators suggest worst may be over NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- If you want to see where you are driving, you look out the windshield, not the rear-view mirror. And if you want to forecast where the economy is headed, you must examine those statistics that lead economic activity, rather than those that trail behind. Unemployment is a case in point. It's not a leading indicator, nor is it considered a coincident indicator. Rather, it is a lagging indicator -- and, at that, only the average duration of joblessness. As for employment, it's considered a coincident indicator -- that ...

The Vicente Fox ShowDelegating White House policy to Mexico. By Mark Krikorian, executive director, Center for Immigration Studies.September 7, 2001 1:20 p.m. A good manager delegates responsibility. The president of the United States has to do the same, being the chief magistrate of a government with a budget of almost $2 trillion and more than 4 million civilian and military employees. In this administration, the formulation of U.S. immigration policy has also been delegated… to the government of Mexico. This has been apparent for some time, but has become even more glaring during this week's state visit to ...

I don’t read newspaper comics much anymore. Dilbert once in a while, and Peanuts and that’s pretty much it. Doonesbury has been around for more than 30 years and, carried in over 600 papers, maintains its popularity. I never cared for it. For one thing, it rarely seemed even mildly amusing. For another, its leftward tilt appeared obvious. Cartoonist Garry Trudeau admits: "It’s no secret, of course, that the strip is written from a generally progressive perspective . . ." Progressive has long been a code word used by liberals slick enough to avoid the liberal tag. Sunday’s Doonesbury was ...

EDINBURGH, Scotland -- Proposed rules on spanking are being hit with criticism from both sides in Scotland. Scotland's ruling executive is pushing the rules, which would make it illegal to spank toddlers. The plans have to be approved by the Scottish Parliament. Opposition lawmakers say they violate parents' rights. But children's charities say the proposals don't go far enough. The proposals would make it illegal to strike a child under three. It would also ban such punishment by child-sitters and in child-care centers. A spokeswoman for a children's charity says Scotland should join several European countries in banning physical punishment ...

Slow Tourism Closes Israeli Hotels JERUSALEM (AP) -- Israel's tourism industry has lost billions of dollars in the 11 months since Israel-Palestinian fighting broke out, and the downturn has forced 30 hotels to close, officials said Friday. Many hotels have had almost no guests, said Nitzan Ilan, spokeswoman for the Israeli Tourism Ministry. Some of the hotels may temporarily be converted into offices or dormitories for immigrants, she said. Tourism plunged 53 percent during the first six months of 2001, compared to the same period last year, according to ministry figures. The industry has lost $2 billion since fighting ...

ASHINGTON, Sept. 7 -- Trying to turn today's unpleasant news about the economy to his political advantage, President Bush said today he sympathizes with any American who loses a job but has no sympathy for Democrats who get in the way of his "pro-growth agenda." ``Too many people are losing their jobs,'' Mr. Bush said on an incongruously sunny afternoon outside the Oval Office. ``The slowdown is real, and it's affecting many lives, and we're concerned about it.'' Mr. Bush stood alongside Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi, the Republican Senate leader; Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, and Vice President Dick Cheney. ...

FRIDAY FAX, September 7, 2001 Volume 4, Number 38 UN REPORT CHALLENGES POPULATION BOMB THEORIES A new UN report studying the effects of population growth on the environment provides information that challenges some of the most fundamental assumptions of population control, assumptions used to justify sterilization, abortion and contraception. "World Population Monitoring 2001," prepared by the Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, emphasizes that many of the most dire predictions about the consequences of population growth have proven unfounded, and remain unlikely to occur even if the world population rises to 8.9 billion by 2050. The ...
