†These numbers show how the industry ranks in total campaign giving as compared to more than 80 other industries. Rankings are shown only for industries (such as the Automotive industry) -- not for widely encompassing "sectors" (such as Transportation) or more detailed "categories" (like car dealers).

METHODOLOGY: The numbers on this page are based on contributions of $200 or more from PACs and individuals to federal candidates and from individual and soft money donors to political parties, as reported to the Federal Election Commission. While election cycles are shown in charts as 1996, 1998, 2000 etc. they actually represent two-year periods. For example, the 2000 election cycle runs from January 1, 1999 to December 31, 2000.  Data for the current election cycle were released by the Federal Election Commission on Friday, June 01, 2001. Feel free to distribute or cite this material, but please credit the Center for Responsive Politics.

NOTE Soft money contributions were not publicly disclosed until the 1991-92 election cycle.

KEYWORDS:
Please note how the pro-choice lobby now gives almost as much money to the GOPs as it does to the Demos - GOP use to get only 11% on 1990.

I guess this must be the 'big tent' policy at work. If you actually go to the site and check the pro-life donations you will find that the Demos continue to get only a small fraction of the pro-lifers' pie.

My interpretation: the 2-party system consists now of a radical left party and the increasingly clueless party - the latter would do and/or say just about anything in order to get more votes than the other. And more donations money.

In the total scheme of things, it's not even much money. You'd think the clueless party would have more sense than to sell out and offend its base without even getting paid very well.

By the way, did you notice the trend?

It looks like the GOP may turn into the pro-choicers' favorite party by 2004.

I suspect it's as much a question of hedging bets than anything else. Many corporations do the same thing - donate almost equally to both parties.

On the other hand, look at 'women issues' groups. The Demos seem to literally 'own' the women's orgs moneys.

If the data are accurate, this reveals a very troubling (but not totally surprising) trend. Thanks for the revealing post.

Not a lot of cash. Most of the pro-abortion money probably comes into the Dems under women's issues or something. Really, don't get overly exorcised about how the evil pro-choicers are taking over the GOP.

It not the big tent exactly. Liberals give money to pro-choice Republicans to beat pro-life Republicans in primaries.

The GOP is turning into the Democrats of the 1950's. There won't be many true conservative for much longer. Hey, facts are facts.

That's true...wonder why that is? By the way, my "hedging bets" comment was based on the fact that I think abortion advocates would choose an anti-life Dem over an anti-life Republican 100% of the time.
