Bush Confronts Unsettling Economic News

WASHINGTON, Sept. 7 -- Trying to turn today's unpleasant news about the economy to his political advantage, President Bush said today he sympathizes with any American who loses a job but has no sympathy for Democrats who get in the way of his "pro-growth agenda."

``Too many people are losing their jobs,'' Mr. Bush said on an incongruously sunny afternoon outside the Oval Office. ``The slowdown is real, and it's affecting many lives, and we're concerned about it.''

Mr. Bush stood alongside Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi, the Republican Senate leader; Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, and Vice President Dick Cheney. There were reports this afternoon that the President had discussed with Mr. Lott and Mr. Hastert a proposal that would trigger across-the-board budget cuts next year if spending starts eating into Social Security reserves.

He said a key to a return to full-fledged prosperity is tax relief, enactment of his proposed energy program and increased trade authority for the presidency.

The effects of the tax cut, which Congress recently enacted, is ``just now making its way in the economy'' as people get their rebate checks, Mr. Bush asserted. He said he would continue to battle any lawmakers who think tax cuts are wrong and ``not let them pick the pockets of the American taxpayers.''

His energy plan, which would include drilling in part of the Alaska wildlife refuse, is crucial to lowering fuel and energy costs and creating jobs, he said.

In alluding to trade-promotion authority, which would increase the President's power in negotiating trade deals with other countires by curbing Congress's power to amend such deals, Mr. Bush was asking for something that Congress did not give his predecessor, Bill Clinton, in his second term.

While lamenting the state of the economy, Mr. Bush said the trouble had really started last summer, under the Clinton presidency. Assertions like that are difficult or impossible to prove, but they are not surprising when the economy sours. For that matter, Democrats on Capitol Hill are blaming Mr. Bush and his Republican allies and their beloved tax cuts for much of what is happening.

I was laid off by a dot bomb in April, and this afternoon I have just signed an offer to go back to work this Monday. I am thanking God that I am finally through this nightmare and my prayers are with everyone else who is being affected by this economy.

" but has no sympathy for Democrats who get in the way of his "pro-growth agenda.""

Nice… now if he can repeat it 20 times as if he's running for president, it may illustrate who's really working in the peoples' interests.

Ummmm, BUSH WAS THE ONE WHO WAS PREDICTING THIS ECONOMY BACK DURING THE ELECTION. It was Democrats and their socialist allies in the press that were pooh-poohing Bush for "talking down" the economy. These liberals make Junior look like a genius. Of course, that's not too hard to do since liberals are complete idiots. At any rate, it's completely false for the NY Pravda to write as if Bush would be shocked by the very thing he was anticipating.

Nice… now if he can repeat it 20 times as if he's running for president, it may illustrate who's really working in the peoples' interests.

If he repeats it 20 times, it may have the desired effect of pulling the wool over the eyes of a gullible public and a lazy press -- but that won't make what he is trying to sell true.

For example: WHAT pro-growth agenda is Bush talking about? Does he know? Does anyone?

Second, how exactly are the Democrats getting in the way of anything? Bush needs to give us specific examples of Dem interference if he wants us to believe him. The situation is becoming far too serious for platitudes and generalities.

Third: It is going to be tough to make this downturn look like it's Clinton's fault -- especially when Gore was calling what Bush proposed to do (and did) a "risky scheme" all through the campaign. Now, Bush's "risky scheme" has failed and the economy is following it south. If the media really was liberal, it would be repeating all those dozens of clips of Gore calling the Bush plan a "risky scheme" so that there would be no doubt as to who is at fault for this slowdown. But, lucky for Bush, the media is in Rove's pocket.

Blaming Clinton again and again and again for every shortcoming of the GOP won't work any more. Not when average Americans believe that if someone could wave a wand and make Clinton president again, all the economic woes that Bush says he "inherited" would soon be distant memories, and Clinton would manage to create yet another huge surplus out of a Bush deficit.

what's difficult or impossible to prove about when the "trouble really started"??????????

And that last sentence has me steamed!!! Democrats' blame is equal to what we all knew 18 months ago? You may be a FReeper if your first response is:

"What a bunch of clymers!"

First, second, third bla bla bla…

I don't argue with unsupported platitudes from ideologues with inherently dishonest ideas. Don't write to me.

Dear Hidy,

The pro-growth agenda is in the energy program, lowered taxes, reduced federal spending, and removal of job-hampering regulations.

Please read the White House web site, or the entire statement which I just posted. Many people on this site have been talking about the faltering economy since last spring. It IS Clinton's economy, just like we are still under Clinton's budget until the end of the fiscal year.

Hoping you eventually get a clue, I remain,
Miss Marple

Putting more Americans out of work by allowing cheap, hazardous Mexican trucks on our highways?

Hey! That'll increase service sector jobs for paramedics and morticians!

But hey, since it wasn't Gore's own money who gives a rats rear, right? *hint* (all those maroons who gave money to gore's campaign) What do you want to bet those same maroons won't be digging in their wallet for gore in '04? Hellary! That's where the money goes next! She needs to complete her set of silver and crystal. Oh, and she saw the most to die for little settee, she simply must have!
