Prime Minister Mark Carney responded Tuesday to a report showing the Canadian economy has contracted for two consecutive quarters, saying part of the “weakness” is linked to the government’s decision to scale back immigration. He said Ottawa’s plans to boost investment will ultimately produce a “stronger, more resilient economy,” but that economic data will be “uneven” in the interim. “You have these cross currents as the economy is being fundamentally transformed. We’re going to continue to work. We’re making progress, but there’s more to be done,” he said. Mr. Carney’s comments are his first about Statistics Canada’s quarterly GDP report,...

ALBANY – Democratic lawmakers are looking to change the state constitution in a power grab that will allow them to carve up congressional maps — and target seven Republican-held seats. A proposed amendment released Monday by the Democratic majority would give its own members authority to change the maps to draw new congressional district lines favorable to their candidates, with insiders saying it could mean flipping at least four GOP congressional seats in the state. Democrats, who control both houses of the state legislature and hold a more than 2-to-1 voter enrollment advantage over Republicans, would need voters to approve...

A church on Nantucket says it won’t host its Fourth of July readings of the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights as America celebrates its 250th anniversary because of “our own whiteness.” Division has sprouted in the quaint Massachusetts island community after the Nantucket Unitarian Universalists announced that it wouldn’t be holding its annual holiday readings of America’s founding documents in “political protest.” The Nantucket Unitarian Universalists, which says it puts its “faith into action through social justice work,” is pointing directly to the Supreme Court’s ruling that electoral mapmakers relied too heavily on racial demographics to hit specific...

Net migration could be as much as 50,000 higher than estimated because thousands of foreign migrants may not have left the UK, official figures suggest. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has admitted that it “assumes” that more than 50,000 non-EU and EU migrants have left the UK at the end of their visas, even though it does not have accurate data to confirm their departures. Its own research has found some of these people “might still be in the UK” and this means that its current method for calculating net migration “would incorrectly emigrate them”. Some of these could...

Scott Pelley’s brazen attack on the new boss of ’60 Minutes’ has divided staffers at CBS News, with some insiders branding his behavior as “bullying” and “grandstanding” — and yet another reckoning it was “a set up,” The Post has learned. Pelley laced into Nick Bilton, the new executive producer of “60 Minutes” on Monday during a meet-and-greet with staffers, calling out the boss’ lack of TV experience, challenging his vision and telling him he will “never be welcomed here.” “What did he accomplish?” one CBS source said of Pelley’s explosive attack. “He embarrassed the company and the leadership.” Network...

Iran announced its 26-man roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday, and Sardar Azmoun, nicknamed the "Iranian Messi," was not on it. Coach Amir Ghalenoei had Azmoun dropped from Iran’s national soccer squad in March, and it was reportedly due to a social media post that angered Iranian authorities. Azmoun, a 31-year-old striker who is well known for his time playing for Bayer Leverkusen and AS Roma, posted a photo alongside the Emir of Dubai, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is a known U.S. ally and has shown support for President Donald Trump’s involvement in the war...

It is a running joke with my repeat students that “it depends” is the phrase most likely to set me off during a classroom discussion. Don’t get me wrong, I understand context matters, and we should strive to see as much of the picture as possible. Still, repeated appeals to “it depends” by the same student reveal a very different intent. In most cases, the student is using “it depends” as an excuse not to think carefully, substituting feelings for reason. Such students risk nothing in class discussion, insulating their beliefs and ideas from challenge in precisely the place where...

Los Angeles voters are heading to the polls Tuesday to elect their next mayor, a race that has put all eyes on the nation's second-largest city. But if no one reaches more than 50% of the vote after all the ballots are counted, the top-two vote getters will head to a November runoff. Traders on prediction market platform Kalshi think the incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and insurgent former reality TV star Spencer Pratt are most likely to advance to the second round. Traders are fairly certain Bass will make it to the second round, giving her 93% odds. Bass has...

MAGA host Dave Rubin drew a painful blank when a debate opponent asked him for a single measure under which the economy has improved under the second Trump administration. “What is one main metric that Donald Trump has made better off since he got into office?” asked one of Rubin’s opponents in the debate, published Sunday by Jubilee Media under the title “Dave Rubin vs 20 Far-Left Democrats.” “An example would be GDP, unemployment, inflation, et cetera,” the person, who goes by the social media handle “parkergetajob,” added.

For thousands of people across southern Italy, the first sign that something unusual had happened was not a news alert or a warning from authorities. It was the sound. Shortly after midnight on 2 June, residents in several regions reported hearing a loud rumble and feeling their homes shake. Some were already asleep when the tremor woke them. Others took to social media within minutes, trying to work out whether what they had just experienced was an earthquake. It was. A 6.2 earthquake rattled southern Italy and was felt hundreds of kilometres away Tourist begs police not to fine her...

First, the bad news: The Iran War shows no signs of ending soon. Tehran on Monday said it would suspend peace talks with the U.S. in protest of Israeli strikes in Gaza and Lebanon. Now, the even worse news: The Iran War is linked to the Ukraine War in myriad disturbing ways, and the longer the former drags on, the more dangerous the latter becomes. Talk of “World War III” tends to be ludicrously overwrought—crafted to generate clicks and grab eyeballs on social media, rather than highlight geopolitical risks—but the connections between these two wars have, if anything, been underdiscussed....

This story is unbelievable... from the show transcripts: "In 2021, my church was bombed, right? I was going to ask you about that. It was bombed by homosexuals because of my preaching. So, we started in the city of Elmani and you know, it was a righteous church."
