Net migration could be as much as 50,000 higher than estimated because thousands of foreign migrants may not have left the UK, official figures suggest.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has admitted that it “assumes” that more than 50,000 non-EU and EU migrants have left the UK at the end of their visas, even though it does not have accurate data to confirm their departures.
Its own research has found some of these people “might still be in the UK” and this means that its current method for calculating net migration “would incorrectly emigrate them”.
Some of these could be “overstayers” who have breached the terms of their work, study or visitor visas by remaining in the country without the legal right to do so. Others may be making a fresh visa application after being granted temporary leave to remain.
Other reasons could include leaving the UK via the Common Travel Area through Ireland, that they died while in the UK, were dual nationals and used a different passport to leave, or were not matched to an arrival.
The latest ONS figures showed net migration had halved to 171,000 in the year ending December 2025, its lowest level since the Covid pandemic halted most international travel five years ago. This included 278,000 non-EU nationals and 118,000 EU nationals emigrating from the UK, according to the data.
The data were obtained from the ONS by Neil O’Brien, the shadow minister for policy renewal and development, using Freedom of Information (FOI) laws.
“We are being told that it is a great triumph that net migration is down in 2025, but how much of that is non-EU emigration that isn’t really happening?” said Mr O’Brien.

Unfortunately, it wouldn’t matter much if he did. His resignation would not trigger a new election. Instead, Parliament would meet and choose his successor.
And since Parliament is controlled by the woke Labour Party, you’d just get another Starmer. Or maybe one even worse.
