The Canadian dad accused of killing his 9-year-old daughter is in massive debt, struggled to pay child support — and made bizarre posts about how the little girl disrupted his life. Luciano Frattolin, 45, claimed to have a high-flying lifestyle as a coffee company owner, but when he appeared in court Monday to answer charges that he murdered his daughter, Melina, during a trip to upstate New York, he told a judge that he was broke and couldn’t afford a lawyer. New research finds that for people diagnosed with nonmetastatic low-risk prostate cancer later in life, and treated according to NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology, 90% were likely to survive their cancer for their remaining life-expectancy. Of those with nonmetastatic higher-risk cancer and a longer life expectancy, that likelihood was still greater than 65%. The researchers studied 62,839 people diagnosed with non-metastatic prostate cancer in Sweden between the years 2000-2020. All were placed within a defined risk category, had a life expectancy of more than three years, and were treated according to evidence-based, expert consensus-driven recommendations. Those with low- and...

Bessent, one of the easiest going, most accessible, truly fantastic Trump cabinet members (out of a superb and stellar cast of characters, I might add), has called for a look-see into exactly what's been going on in the House of Powell. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday suggested a review of the Federal Reserve that would go beyond the current controversy over building renovations and look at its overall function. “What we need to do is examine the entire Federal Reserve institution and whether they have been successful,” Bessent said during an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” “Has the organization...

Hair loss is one of the most feared and traumatic side effects of cancer chemotherapy treatment. That's why scalp cooling caps, often worn during chemotherapy, have become an increasingly common sight in cancer wards. Chemotherapy drugs work by killing rapidly dividing cancer cells—unfortunately, they cause collateral toxicity to rapidly dividing healthy cells in our body, like those in the roots of our hair. Automated scalp cooling devices are used just before, during and after chemotherapy. It reduces blood flow to the scalp, meaning less of the drug reaches the hair follicles. But despite its potential, scalp cooling doesn't work for...

As more and more employees return to the office, by choice or by force, large companies are more interested than ever in understanding how they use the space. The pandemic fundamentally changed how and where people work, and even in the return-to-office dynamic, there is a greater focus on how to best utilize and monetize office space, as well as make it more energy-efficient. To that end, some companies are using body heat. Butlr, a 6-year-old, San Francisco-based startup that was a spinoff of MIT Media Lab, leverages body temperature technology to understand how humans act and interact in the...

Florida's turbulent housing market has been described in five chilling words as homeowners desperately try to offload properties. Chen Zhao, the head of economics research for Redfin, described South Florida as the 'epicenter of housing market weakness' in the US. 'The question for the rest of the country is, will this spread? Florida is uniquely bad right now,' Zhao told Bloomberg last month. The area saw a huge influx of new residents during the Covid-19 pandemic. Americans, freed by work from home orders, arrived in search of sunnier weather and lower taxes. But now the bubble has well and truly...

Los Angeles was devastated by wildfires back in January, and the area is still feeling the impacts of the disaster. So when $100 million was raised by two FireAid concerts at the Intuit Dome and Kia Forum in Inglewood, California, featuring acts such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Billie Elish, and Jelly Roll, you'd have thought the money would make its way to fire victims. Well, it's not that simple. Sue Pascoe, editor-in-chief at Circling The News, has the story of how this money ended up not going to fire victims, but instead making its way to...

Last week, CIA Director John Ratcliffe referred former CIA Director John Brennan to the FBI for a criminal investigation. Some reports claim the referral relates to Brennan potentially having perjured himself before Congress. But on Wednesday, President Donald Trump may have pointed to another direction the FBI probe may take. In an interview with reporter John Solomon, Trump said he would declassify an annex to the May 2023 report filed by John Durham, the special counsel appointed during Trump’s first term to investigate Russiagate. The annex, according to Solomon, deals with the “Clinton Plan intelligence”—and, says Solomon, “lawmakers and Durham...

Explanation: Can some supernovas explode twice? Yes, when the first explosion acts like a detonator for the second. This is a leading hypothesis for the cause of supernova remnant (SNR) 0509-67.5. In this two-star system, gravity causes the larger and fluffier star to give up mass to a smaller and denser white dwarf companion. Eventually the white dwarf's near-surface temperature goes so high that it explodes, creating a shock wave that goes both out and in -- and so triggers a full Type Ia supernova near the center. Recent images of the SNR 0509-67.5 system, like the featured image from...

A video showing federal agents walking through an Inland Empire grocery store Monday morning prompted a call for answers by community advocates. The video shared by the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice (ICIJ) showed agents exiting an “employees only” area at the Stater Bros. location on West Hold Boulevard in Ontario. The incident prompted ICIJ Executive Director Javier Hernandez to ask why the agents were allowed into the store and expressed concerns over the Ontario Police Department’s role in the operation.
