In Fresno, California, social media rumors about impending immigration raids at the city’s schools left some parents panicking — even though the raids were all hoaxes. In Denver, a real immigration raid at an apartment complex led to scores of students staying home from school, according to a lawsuit. And in Alice, Texas, a school official incorrectly told parents that Border Patrol agents might board school buses to check immigration papers. President Donald Trump’s immigration policies already are affecting schools across the country, as officials find themselves responding to rising anxiety among parents and their children, including those who are...

“It is really, really a sad day in America,” Rep. Ilhan Omar declared at a rally protesting the reconstruction of USAID. It wasn’t a sad day for America, but it was so for Somalia. Over the last two years, USAID doled out $2.3 billion in “humanitarian assistance” to Omar’s native Somalia. Last year it reported a request for $1.6 billion in aid and even in December 2024, with the Biden administration on the way out the door, it sent an additional $29 million.

The Indus Valley civilization was one of the most advanced in the world for over 500 years. More than 1000 settlements sprawled across 250,000 square miles of what is now Pakistan and northwest India from 2600 BCE to 1900 BCE. It had several large, well-planned cities like Mohenjo-daro, common iconography, and a script no one has been able to understand. Linguists studying the Indus script don't know anything about the underlying language and there's no multilingual Rosetta Stone, but scholars have analyzed its structure for clues and compared it to other scripts. Most Indologists think it's “logo-syllabic” script like Sumerian...

Gambling addiction has soared since the legalization of sports betting in most American states, reveals a new study. Researchers found a “dramatic” increase in sports betting and gambling addiction help-seeking since the landmark Murphy v. NCAA Supreme Court decision in 2018 paved the way for states to legalize gambling on sports. Since the ruling, researchers from the University of California San Diego Qualcomm Institute and School of Medicine found a “staggering” growth in the sportsbook industry. The number of states with operational sportsbooks grew from one in 2017 to 38 last year while total sports wagers skyrocketed from US $4.9...

Pope Francis is seriously worried about his health after being hospitalized with severe bronchitis, and is rushing to tie up loose ends ahead of the battle to succeed him. The pope was admitted to a special ward earlier this month in Gemelli Hospital in Rome with a respiratory infection, and he has since been forced to cancel a number of public appearances. It’s the latest health crisis for the 88-year-old pontiff, who had part of a lung removed as a young man and has become increasingly fragile in recent years. The Holy See press office has trickled out continuous updates,...

"If Europe genuinely wants to contribute to the resolution of the conflict, the solution is straightforward: cease all military and other forms of support for the Kiev regime," Alexander Grushko statedMOSCOW, February 18. /TASS/. The role of the European Union in resolving the conflict in Ukraine is ruled out. Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Alexander Grushko, stated that Europe must halt its arms supplies to Kiev, if it wishes to be included in future negotiations. "The EU countries continue to demand a place at the negotiating table where the Ukrainian conflict is to be discussed. This is astonishing, considering they have...

Mitochondrial dysfunction in β-cells can cause their immaturity and impaired insulin production, contributing to diabetes. Researchers identified a stress response triggered by damaged mitochondria that prevents these cells from functioning properly, but blocking the response with a drug restored their ability to control glucose in mice. Mitochondrial stress disrupts insulin production in diabetes, but reversing the damage may restore β-cell function. Mitochondria are essential for generating the energy that fuels cells and enables them to function. However, mitochondrial defects are linked to the development of diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Patients with this disorder either cannot produce enough insulin...

TOPEKA, Kan. (KCTV) - The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security allowing KBI agents to work with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to remove immigrants who are living in or who have entered the country illegally, announced Kansas AG Kris Kobach. Kansas is the second state after Florida to enter such an agreement. “All across Kansas, illegal aliens who are dangerous criminals or gang members are released back to the streets on a regular basis. That will end. This agreement will ensure that those criminals are deported,” Kobach said.

NATIONAL DRINK WINE DAY While February 18th is observed annually as National Drink Wine Day, it would be a shame to celebrate only one day a year. It also can reduce the bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase the good (HDL). Drinking wine includes other benefits as well. When paired with the right meal, it enhances the flavors of spices, fruits, and...

When the coalition government emerged after the last German federal election in the fall of 2021, then-incoming Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) did not object to being called the "climate chancellor." That was no surprise: the climate crisis had been a top issue during the election campaign. Three and a half years later, campaign speeches barely mention climate protection. The dominant issues are how to curb irregular immigration and how to boost Germany's sluggish economy. Recently, the environmental group World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) was appalled when Chancellor Scholz expressed approval of importing oil and liquefied gas from the US...

Democratic strategist James Carville argued that political actors in his party should “play possum” right now, as grassroots organizing pops up across the country, noting that the “freight train is moving.” Carville joined MSNBC’s “The Beat” on Monday, where host Ari Melber asked him to weigh into the nationwide protests against the Trump administration and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). “This is happening all around the country. So, the question is, how should Democratic politicians respond to this? And I think they should do is, what we call in rural America, play possum. Just let it go. Don’t...

Most of the time, when Donald Trump bashes you, it’s over. When it’s done behind the seal of the presidency, it’s doubly over. For Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who’s no longer the leader of the Senate Republicans, the man is, politically speaking, a dead man walking. His approval numbers are absolute garbage, and he’s solidified his reputation as being the “odd man out” among Republicans when he voted against Pete Hegseth, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Tulsi Gabbard for secretary of defense, Health and Human Services secretary, and director of national intelligence respectively.
