Gambling addiction has soared since the legalization of sports betting in most American states, reveals a new study.
Researchers found a “dramatic” increase in sports betting and gambling addiction help-seeking since the landmark Murphy v. NCAA Supreme Court decision in 2018 paved the way for states to legalize gambling on sports.
Since the ruling, researchers from the University of California San Diego Qualcomm Institute and School of Medicine found a “staggering” growth in the sportsbook industry.
The number of states with operational sportsbooks grew from one in 2017 to 38 last year while total sports wagers skyrocketed from US $4.9 billion in 2017 to $121.1 billion in 2023, with 94% of wagers during 2023 placed online.

I like the freedom to do all kinds of things.
But we keep loading society up with garbage like this.
Gambling, drugs, booze, porn, etc.
And we keep pretending it will all be fine.
Huh. Imagine that. At least the government gets a little funding.

The high end substance abuse counselors were switching to gambling addiction twenty years ago.

I also note most of the ads for sports betting target blacks.
Gambling has been around forever but when it went online where you don’t have to go to a casino or an OTB place that’s when it exploded.
And 90% of the advertising seems to be aimed squarely at minorities, blacks primarily. Yeah, let’s further decimate this group. So sad.
But with the big salaries players get these days, why would they risk it.
This isn’t 1919 where players got relatively money, and that fixing games was a huge enticement.
What did they expect would happen? I thought this was a planned outcome!
This was inevitable. Gambling addiction ruins lives. And the pro sports leagues promote it.

Like porn, where before you had to go out of your way to consume it, now it’s just a click away in the privacy of your own home.
That still burns me.
