I’m currently working on a long series of articles I’ll be posting on my new “Political Questions” Substack on the topic of “leftist fragility,” but there’s an example of what I’m after yesterday that is perfect for our short form here. The editor of Mother Jones magazine, Clara Jeffery, was offended and alarmed when an Alaska Airlines flight attendant triggered her with visions of fascism and the whole Handmaid’s Tale nightmare:I’ve circled what is known in the Twitterverse as “the ratio,” that is, when Comments exceed the number of Likes by an almost 10-to-1 margin as it does here, you’ve...

It was a mistake to visit Los Alamos in the middle of a presidential campaign that Donald Trump might win. I get that now, after wandering around the New Mexico town that is synonymous with clichés like “cautionary tale” and “Pandora’s box” and “be careful what you wish for.”The shadow over the Manhattan Project — the undeniable feat of scientific brainpower that gave us the nuclear bomb — is apparent nine miles from this haunting town, in a roadside protest sign that quotes Pope Francis speaking five years ago in Hiroshima: “The possessing of nuclear weapons is immoral.” It is...

Some years ago, Ta-Nehisi Coates was the hottest thing on the Left, viewed as an intellectual of world-historical importance. Scott performed the excruciating task of reading Coates’s Between the World and Me. It won the National Book Award for nonfiction, but Scott called it the worst book he had ever read.Coates made a lot of money from his racist grifting, and then disappeared from sight. He hasn’t been heard from for a while. Apparently he was writing comic books. But now Coates is back, with a new political cause: kill the Jews! His urgent cause, according to New York magazine, which just...

A society can reach a point where it is literally too stupid to survive. Are we getting close to that fatal juncture? Here is one of many thousands of data points: a judge in Indiana has ordered that state to pay for sex-change surgery on a convicted murderer. Not just any murderer, but Jonathan Richardson, who is serving a 55-year sentence for strangling his own stepdaughter. He now goes by Autumn Cordellionè. The accent is a nice touch. The inmate has sought sex reassignment surgery, including an orchiectomy and vaginoplasty, arguing it is the “only remedy” to treat “persistent gender dysphoria”.The state...

Let’s all give thanks to the Israeli Defense Forces for the operations have that not only gutted Hezbollah, but at long last took out the thugs most responsible for the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing that slaughtered 220 Marines and 21 other US service members. Seven US presidents had failed to bring that basic justice. Bigger picture: Israel’s steady flow of deftly targeted attacks have eviscerated Hezbollah’s leadership and its rocket stocks — and back-footed the civilized world’s ultimate enemy in this conflict, the cabal that controls Iran. It’s also exposed the fatuousness of all the Western “friends” of Israel who...

Texas Governor Greg Abbott .. is making all available tools available to law enforcement to take action against the violent Venezuelan Tren de Aragua (TdA) gang. The governor said the gang members will find their operations in Texas will become unprofitable, forcing them to leave ... They’re looking to make money. And what they’re going to find is, if they’re coming in the state of Texas, they’re losing money. It’s a losing money proposition in the state of Texas, and they’re going to realize they got to take their business elsewhere.” Governor Abbott recently designated the Venezuelan prison gang as...

Underserved communities, as well as specific identity groups, often suffer disproportionately from disasters. As a result, disasters worsen inequities already present in society. This cycle compounds the challenges faced by these communities and increases their risk to future disasters. By instilling equity as a foundation of emergency management and striving to meet the unique needs of underserved communities, the emergency management community can work to break this cycle and build a more resilient nation. The importance of equity in emergency management is not a new concept. The Stafford Act requires FEMA assistance be delivered in an equitable manner without discrimination...

The Vice President's necklace from the HardWear range is described as embodying “an enduring resilience and uninhibited spirit.” Kamala Harris wore a versatile look on Friday to attend a campaign rally in Douglas, Arizona, where she opted to wear accessories with symbolism. She elevated the outfit with statement jewelry, including Tiffany & Co.’s Graduated Link Necklace in 18k yellow gold. A woman in Madison, Wisconsin, returned to her home around 10:30 on Tuesday night after being away all day, to find that the lights were on and a woman was walking around inside. She called the Madison Police Department who arrived about 10 minutes later where they saw the suspect acting as if she owned the place. She was there long enough to make herself a homecooked shrimp pasta dinner, which she apparently pilfered from the homeowner's groceries. Scientists researched a drug called IU1 for its potential to alleviate age-related issues in protein quality control systems. Aging is an unavoidable process often associated with multiple health conditions. As a result, research into the effects of aging has become increasingly important, with scientists exploring ways to slow down aging and mitigate its harmful effects on the human body. Although aging leads to the gradual decline of all bodily systems, one of the primary contributing factors is the disruption of protein homeostasis, also known as “proteostasis.” Our cells have several mechanisms that help detect damaged or misfolded proteins and break...

But the brutal fact is that civilian deaths are Hezbollah’s strongest weapon. As Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, once said: “We have discovered how to hit the Jews where they are the most vulnerable. The Jews love life, so that is what we shall take away from them. We are going to win because they love life and we love death.” [...] First of all, Israel is responding not just to those recent killings but to a long string of attacks since it withdrew from Lebanon in 2000. The kidnapping was just the straw that broke the camel’s...
