Two other individuals, including Perry's live-in personal assistant, were charged on Thursday in connection with Perry’s death last year from ketamine.

Traditionally linguists have bemoaned the fact that the general public knows little of what we do because the subject isn’t taught in schools. But that has changed over the past 20 years or so, as the internet and especially social media have been so effective at getting the word out. I have rejoiced to see the public becoming ever more hip to the fact that language always changes, that you aren’t handicapping your child by raising them to be bilingual, that the way I just used “them” does not spell the fall of our Republic.Twenty years ago I never thought...

Iran could attack Israel with no warning within days, White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said Thursday as the region remained on edge. “An attack could come with little or no warning and certainly could come in the coming days, and we have to be ready for it,” he told reporters during a virtual briefing. “But the messaging effort continues and will continue, because what we’re really after is de-escalation and trying to prevent this.” Washington has sent messages to Iran through third parties to underscore this message, Kirby said, as all eyes were on the Gaza hostage...

Peter Marshall, the actor and singer turned game show host who played straight man to the stars for 16 years on “The Hollywood Squares,” has died. He was 98. He died Thursday of kidney failure at his home in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles, publicist Harlan Boll said. Marshall helped define the form of the smooth, professional, but never-too-serious modern game show host on more than 5,000 episodes of the series that ran on NBC from 1966 to 1981.

Explanation: Bright Mars and even brighter Jupiter are in close conjunction just above the pine trees in this post-midnight skyscape from Vallentuna, Sweden. Taken on August 12 during a geomagnetic storm, the snapshot records the glow of aurora borealis or northern lights, beaming from the left side of the frame. Of course on that date Perseid meteors rained through planet Earth's skies, grains of dust from the shower's parent, periodic comet Swift-Tuttle. The meteor streak at the upper right is a Perseid plowing through the atmosphere at about 60 kilometers per second. Also well-known in Earth's night sky, the bright...

It's like we're living in crazy town! How did Kamala Harris turn the race around in a way that Joe Biden never could? An information operation conducted by the media and pollsters, that's how! Don't fall for it. Nothing has changed in our numbers, and Donald Trump is still winning.

Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg turned heads Wednesday when he posted an image of his wife Priscilla Chan standing next to a large silver and blue statue sculpted in her likeness. The statue - which stands about 7ft (2.1m) tall - was commissioned by the CEO of Facebook's parent company in an effort to honour "the Roman tradition of making sculptures of your wife", Mr Zuckerberg wrote on Instagram. New York-based artist Daniel Arsham crafted the sculpture, which was placed under a tree in what appears to be a residential garden. The figure's striking colour and towering size sent the internet...

The Taliban on Wednesday celebrated the three-year anniversary of the disastrous Biden-Harris withdrawal that gave them power in Afghanistan, more secure in power than ever despite constant complaints from the international community about their appalling human rights offenses. Taliban victory parades on Wednesday included the huge amount of American military equipment abandoned to the terrorist regime by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Each former American military vehicle was festooned with the black-and-white flags of the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.” Biden’s early vows to keep the Taliban regime completely isolated from the world community have given way to a more nuanced...

Shortly after Vice President Kamala Harris handed over the podium to President Biden on Thursday, dozens of attendees at a joint event simply stood up and left rather than listen to the retiring commander-in-chief. The rude demonstration was a stark demonstration of the enthusiasm gap among Democrats revved up by Harris’ sudden elevation as the party’s presidential nominee — after Biden regularly suffered low rally attendance replete with heckling. ... The event ostensibly was to celebrate the announcement of 10 prescription drug prices that will be lowered for senior citizens enrolled in Medicare Part D — with those savings taking...

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris held their first joint event since Biden exited the 2024 race and endorsed her to take his place atop the Democratic ticket. The two walked out together to cheers to deliver remarks on stage at Prince George's County Community College in Maryland about the economy and what their administration's done to alleviate costs for Americans. That includes the administration's announcement earlier Thursday that the Department of Health and Human Services reached an agreement on price negotiations for 10 commonly used drugs that they say will save Medicare enrollees $1.5 billion in out-of-pocket...

Ukraine's top commander said on Thursday Kyiv had set up a military commandant's office in the occupied part of Russia's Kursk region where he said his forces were still advancing, even as Moscow's troops stepped up its offensives in Ukraine's east. The remarks by Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi were the strongest sign yet that Kyiv's forces plan to dig in after launching a lightning cross-border assault on Russia last week that has opened a new front in the 2-1/2 year-old all-out war. "We are moving forward in Kursk region. A military commandant's office has been created which must ensure order...

Donald Trump’s lawyers on Thursday urged the judge overseeing his Manhattan criminal hush money case to delay the former president’s sentencing until after November’s presidential election. The request came one day after Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan rejected Trump’s latest demand that the judge step aside from the case, clearing the way for the Republican presidential candidate to learn his fate as soon as Sept. 18.The lawyers argued for the sentencing to be paused to allow Trump time to appeal if Merchan, in a decision expected by Sept. 16, declines to toss the conviction based on the US Supreme Court’s...

August Hanning has claimed that there appears to have been a secret arrangement between Kiev and Warsaw Poland was likely involved in the underwater explosions that ruptured the Nord Stream underwater gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea in September 2022, the former president of Germany’s foreign intelligence agency has claimed. August Hanning also alleged that Warsaw has intentionally obstructed Berlin’s investigation into the incident. No one has so far claimed responsibility for the blasts, which brought an end to the supply of Russian gas to Germany via Nord Stream 1 and damaged the parallel Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which had...
