Foreign state actors may be amplifying online disinformation that has fuelled a week of riots on the streets of Britain, Downing Street has suggested. Russian state media were among those sharing false claims that the suspect accused of killing three young girls in Southport last Monday was an asylum seeker who had arrived in the UK on a small boat. Channel3Now, which purports to be a legitimate American news outlet but acts as an “aggregator” for fake claims, wrongly named the attacker as Ali Al-Shakati, believed to be a fictitious name. The subsequent unrest has prompted calls for greater efforts...

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and several dozen state attorneys general had sued Google, accusing the company of paying billions of dollars to Apple, Samsung and other companies to make Google the default search provider on smartphones and web browsers. "This victory against Google is an historic win for the American people," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. "No company—no matter how large or...

Just when you think the state of California couldn’t possibly pass more laws hostile to preborn humans, legislators surprise you with three more bills aimed at protecting the direct and intentional killing of preborn children. Turning ERs into abortion centers AB 2490, “Reproductive Health Emergency Preparedness Program,” would create an incentivized training program for emergency room medical professionals to learn how to commit abortions. Essentially, this bill aims to turn emergency rooms into abortion facilities, and holds a competition to see which emergency department most achieves this goal. According to the bill’s text, it “shall work to improve and expand...

A judge on Monday ruled that Google’s ubiquitous search engine has been illegally exploiting its dominance to squash competition and stifle innovation in a seismic decision that could shake up the internet and hobble one of the world’s best-known companies. The highly anticipated decision issued by U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta comes nearly a year after the start of a trial pitting the U.S. Justice Department against Google in the country’s biggest antitrust showdown in a quarter century. After reviewing reams of evidence that included testimony from top executives at Google, Microsoft and Apple during last year’s 10-week trial, Mehta...

A Yemeni drone specialist who had traveled to Iraq to train other Iranian-backed fighters was among those killed in a U.S. airstrike near Baghdad last week, American and Iraqi defense officials said, illustrating the extensive cooperation among militant groups supported by Tehran. The July 30 airstrike in Musayib, a town south of Iraq’s capital, targeted militants preparing to launch an attack on U.S. forces, officials have said. The strike killed Hussein Abdullah Mastoor al-Shabal, a Houthi commander, though the Pentagon was unaware of who he was until after an assessment of the operation’s results, said the U.S. official, who like...

Rebeca Andrade, Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles capped an exhilarating gymnastics meet at the Paris Olympics with a first, as the trio stood on the podium together for the floor exercise. They’re the first three Black gymnasts to share the top three spots in an Olympics — a feat that also occurred at last year's world championships, when Biles and Andrade shared the podium with Shilese Jones in the individual all-around.

I started a thread like this a couple of years ago when I bought a new computer and transferred all my music files to it. I didn't stick with it, but maybe this time I'll be more dedicated! One of the things that caught my eye was the "Play Count" number for each of the MP3 and MP4 files I moved from one computer to the other. As I went through these tracks on iTunes, I decided to rank them in the order of their play frequency to see if there were any interesting patterns in the number of times...

Over the past several weeks, every major news outlet has noticed — and reported extensively — on the absence of the topic of abortion from GOP candidates’ speeches. Across the country, Christians have been disappointed by the Republican Party’s failure to make the life issue the hallmark of the presidential campaign. Defending the most innocent, the most vulnerable among us, should be every candidate’s top priority, but the same is true of every Christian. And if most of us take an honest look at our lives, we must admit that we’re not doing a great job being a voice for...

The United Nations Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) on Monday published the results of its investigation into reports that 19 UNRWA employees participated in the Hamas massacre of October 7, 2023. The OIOS investigation found that it had obtained no evidence regarding one of the UNRWA employees, insufficient evidence regarding nine of the employees, enough evidence to say that nine UNRWA employees "may" have participated in the massacre. The employment of the nine employees has been terminated "in the interest of the agency." UNRWA, the United Nations agency dedicated to the descendants of the Arab refugees from Israel's War...

An upstate village clerk accused of swiping more than $1 million — about the same amount as her town’s annual budget — will give up her pension in a historic New York forfeiture case. Disgraced former Addison employee Ursula Stone, 55, allegedly stole $1,171,362 in village funds over at least 19 years — and is now the first politician to fork over her pension under New York’s anti-corruption law, state and county officials announced late last week. “This case represents the most complete, and to be frank, shocking breach of public trust I have encountered in 30 years as a...

Eighteen people living with HIV in Indiana were arrested between 2001 and 2019 for donating plasma, though, thanks to effective screening methods, none of them posed a risk of transmitting the virus, found a new report by the Williams Institute. The Williams Institute is a research center focusing on law and public policy as they pertain to sexual orientation and gender identity; it is part of the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law. HIV criminalization refers to the use of unfair laws to target people with HIV—notably African-American, Latinos, LGBTQ people, and women—and punish them because of their...
