Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday launched her own TikTok account, just months after President Joe Biden backed a potential ban of the app. Harris appears to be off to a strong start in popularity with young voters following a proliferation of memes poking fun at her infamous “coconut tree” remark and her affinity for popular singer Charli XCX. In a short clip shared to her new TikTok profile, Harris explained her decision to join the app is due in part to this popularity. "Madam Vice President, are you on TikTok?” a voice asks in the clip. A new study suggests that the first of seven key pyramids in Egypt, the Step Pyramid of Djoser, was built using a hydraulic lift. Dated to about 4,500 years ago, this would move up the introduction of major hydraulic systems from previous beliefs. The landscape, waterways, and interior architecture of the pyramid all point to the hydraulic system.

The federal government’s classified documents indictment was once considered a “slam dunk.” But this month, Trump-appointed Judge Aileen Cannon of the Southern District of Florida dismissed the case, ruling that the attorney general improperly appointed Jack Smith, and therefore Smith could not legally prosecute Trump. Smith promptly notified Cannon that he intends to appeal her decision, but it’s not clear what his strategy will be. There is now a near-zero chance that Donald Trump will be tried over this case in front of a jury before November—but special counsel Jack Smith is forging ahead with an appeal that could go...

ANKARA (Reuters) - President Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that Turkey might enter Israel as it had done in the past in Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh, though he did not spell out what sort of intervention he was suggesting.Erdogan, who has been a fierce critic of Israel's offensive in Gaza, started discussing that war during a speech praising his country's defence industry."We must be very strong so that Israel can't do these ridiculous things to Palestine. Just like we entered Karabakh, just like we entered Libya, we might do similar to them," Erdogan told a meeting of his ruling AK Party...

British television host Piers Morgan ripped into Vice President Harris, calling her the “most far-left senator in modern American history.” Morgan, speaking on “Fox News Saturday Night,” dismissed the scores of support Harris has received from Democrats since President Biden announced last Sunday that he would not seek reelection. “She’s getting a fantastically amazing honeymoon. It’s going to last about a week here, and then reality will kick in,” Morgan said Saturday. “And Donald Trump will start going very hard as he already is about her record. And her record is she’s literally probably the most far-left senator in modern...

Paris 2024 organiser Anne Descamps has apologised for any offence caused by religious depictions during the opening ceremony. Friday's showpiece has drawn some criticism for a banquet scene where an actor playing Greek god Dionysus took centre stage on a table with drag queens, which has been interpreted to resemble Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper painting. Some religious groups condemned the ceremony, including the Catholic Church in France who said it included 'scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity'. In a press conference on Sunday, Descamps apologised for any offence caused and insisted that the ceremony intended to 'celebrate...

Former Vice President Al Gore on Sunday endorsed Vice President Harris for president, joining a chorus of Democrats supporting her bid to replace President Biden as the party’s likely nominee. Gore, a prominent environmental activist, cited Harris’s past support for action addressing climate change in making his endorsement. “As a prosecutor, @KamalaHarris took on Big Oil companies – and won. As @VP, she cast the tie-breaking vote to pass the most significant investment in climate solutions in history, the Inflation Reduction Act,” Gore said in a statement on the social platform X. “That’s the kind of climate champion we need...

Iran says France should be ashamed of itself for its opening ceremony at the Olympics. "The insulting representation of Jesus Christ in Paris yesterday was completely offensive and crossed all red lines. France, a country with a major history of Christianity, must be ashamed of itself, and I implore our Christian people all over the world to speak out against this act. We resolutely condemn this."

From the vantage of the American supermarket aisle, the modern food system looks like a kind of miracle. Everything has been carefully cultivated for taste and convenience — even those foods billed as organic or heirloom — and produce regarded as exotic luxuries just a few generations ago now seems more like staples, available on demand: avocados, mangoes, out-of-season blueberries imported from Uruguay. But the supermarket is also increasingly a diorama of the fragility of a system — disrupted in recent years by the pandemic, conflict and, increasingly, climate change. What comes next? Almost certainly, more disruptions and more hazards, enough...

Forensic analysis suggests that as many as three weapons were fired at the Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday. The FBI said Sunday that the shooter acted alone. The first three shots were consistent with alleged weapon A, the next five were consistent with alleged weapon B, and the final “acoustic impulse” was emitted by a possible weapon C, per audio analysis by Catalin Grigoras, director of the National Center for Media Forensics at the University of Colorado in Denver, and Cole Whitecotton, Senior Professional Research Associate at the same institution. Audio analysis has also confirmed that the gunman...

Anyone who thought America learned from the 2020 Presidential election debacle is sadly mistaken. The Washington Post on Saturday reported that votes in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, two must-win swing states for President Trump and Kamala Harris, will likely take several days to count because of Democrat-friendly absentee ballots, just like in 2020. The Post notes that Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are two of the only states that do not allow pre-canvassing — the act of opening and processing mail ballots ahead of Election Day. Rachel Orey, an elections expert at the Bipartisan Policy Center, told the Post that if the election...
