“As a founding institution and sponsor of Benedictine College, the sisters of Mount St. Scholastica find it necessary to respond to the controversial remarks of Harrison Butker as commencement speaker,” the statement on their website said. “The sisters of Mount St. Scholastica do not believe that Harrison Butker’s comments in his 2024 Benedictine College commencement address represent the Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts college that our founders envisioned and in which we have been so invested.” Currently, the sisters of Mount St. Scholastica contain more than 80 women “devoted to a communal life of prayer, work and hospitality,” according to their...

CV NEWS FEED // The FBI’s response to a Catholic pro-life group’s requests for information related to FBI surveillance of Catholic churches has raised “serious concerns” that the government agency is targeting traditional Catholics, according to a recent news release. Priests for Life stated in a May 16 news release that it requested information from the FBI under the Freedom of Information Act, to which it received several heavily-redacted documents and a transcript of Attorney General Merrick Garland’s Senate March 2023 testimony about a leaked internal FBI memo. CatholicVote reported at the time that Garland was asked several questions about...

CV NEWS FEED // CatholicVote President Brian Burch has called on the NFL’s leaders to clarify whether Catholics are welcome in the NFL in light of their statement denouncing the commencement speech given by Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker at a Catholic college in Kansas. “In that speech, for which he received a standing ovation, Butker called on Catholics to live up to the high ideals of our Faith, including the defense of the dignity of every human life, the foundational role of the family, and the gift of motherhood,” Burch wrote on May 16 to NFL Commissioner Roger...

Not quite a spider, not a scorpion either – where does Douglassarachne acanthopoda fit in? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Douglassarachne acanthopoda was a more experimental version of a modern harvestman, with distinctive armored legs. Image credit: Paul Selden ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This leggy, spiny fella is Douglassarachne acanthopoda, whom we’ll call Doug for short (only kidding). You might look at this fossilized specimen and confidently declare, “That there’s a spider.” But wait! While D. acanthopoda certainly shares many of the characteristics of modern arachnids, it has enough unique features to give palaentologists a headache when it comes to classifying it. Spiders and their ancestors have...

Glass might soon have some competition from an unlikely rival – bamboo. Scientists in China have turned regular old bamboo into a transparent material that’s also resistant to fire and water, and suppresses smoke. Silica glass, made from sand, is still the go-to building material when you need something transparent but strong, like windows. But it’s not particularly sustainable, and can be heavy and brittle. Transparent wood has actually been muscling in on glass’s turf for a few years now. Scientists chemically remove the lignin from the wood fibers, then treat the remaining material with plexiglass or epoxy. The end...

In an unexpected moment, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov referred to his leader, Vladimir Putin, as Chinese President Xi Jinping's "donkey" and admitted that nothing now depends on Moscow. He made the eyebrow-raising comment in response to a question from a Russian propagandist about an informal meeting planned after the official talks during Putin’s visit to Beijing. “You know, as they say in the East, the guest is the master's donkey. Therefore, of course, all programs depend on the kind offers that the Chinese president and his team have made to our president,” Lavrov explained, offering a glimpse into the...

luca Brasi was both protector and enforcer to Don Vito Corleone in the movie The Godfather. Today, Merrick Garland reprises that role for Joe Biden while Garland claims to be the god of all things legal and immune to the law itself. The House of Representatives had demanded the complete recordings of SCO Robert Hur's interview with Biden regarding Biden reckless handling of highly classified materials over the years. Hur recommended that while Biden was guilty that he face no criminal charges because he was a decrepit and forgetful old man. Biden, who had previously insisted that he had nothing...

CHICAGO -- A former warehouse assistant for the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia pleaded guilty Wednesday to transporting millions of dollars worth of stolen Masters tournament memorabilia and historic items, including one of Arnold Palmer's iconic green jackets. Richard Globensky, of Georgia, entered the plea in federal court in Chicago. He was charged with one count of transporting goods knowing they had been stolen. "I plead guilty," Globensky, 39, told the judge. According to federal prosecutors, Globensky took items from the warehouse for sellers in Florida, who then sold them online at a significant markup. Globensky was paid through...

Day 18 of the historic first criminal proceedings against former President Donald Trump is approaching in the New York hush money trial. However, legal experts say prosecutors have not yet determined what “other crime” is required to raise misdemeanor charges to a felony conviction. On Thursday, Michael Cohen, the former president’s lawyer and fixer, was back on the witness stand for his second cross-examination by the defense team. The trial is proceeding smoothly and ahead of schedule. Still, there is a clear flaw in the prosecution’s case that Trump is guilty of 34 felonies related to first-degree business record falsifications....

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) is issuing an apology for a comparison he made regarding the House of Representatives. On Thursday night, Americans were aghast after watching a drama filled hearing of the House Oversight Committee which featured several minutes of members lobbing personal insults at each other. In a post on X, Fetterman shared a CNN article about the moment and wrote, “In the past, I’ve described the U.S. House as The Jerry Springer Show.” “Today, I’m apologizing to The Jerry Springer Show,” he added. During the hearing on Thursday, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) asked Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.)...

Explanation: This well-composed composite panoramic view looks due south from Banks Peninsula near Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island. The base of a tower-like rocky sea stack is awash in the foreground, with stars of the Southern Cross at the top of the frame and planet Earth's south celestial pole near center. Still, captured on May 11, vibrant aurora australis dominate the starry southern sea and skyscape. The shimmering southern lights were part of extensive auroral displays that entertained skywatchers in northern and southern hemispheres around planet Earth, caused by intense geomagnetic storms. The extreme spaceweather was triggered by the...

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As tempers flared among girl congressmen on Capitol Hill yesterday, all male congressmen found themselves in unprecedented agreement that the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was clearly a mistake. Stern-faced congressmen glanced at each other in silent unity as multiple girl congressmen erupted into a shameful shouting match during a House Oversight Committee hearing, with all the men sharing the same sentiment that granting women the right to vote and hold office was a severe miscalculation. "Yeah, the 19th Amendment was a mistake," said Democrat Representative Jamie Raskin. "Back in 1920, I don't think our predecessors...
