John 2:13-22 Friends, in our Gospel, Jesus performs the dramatic gesture of cleansing the temple. His prophetic vocation will manifest itself in all of his speech, gestures, and actions. Jesus’ confrontation with fallen powers and dysfunctional traditions will be highly focused, intense, and disruptive. Standing at the heart of the holy city of Jerusalem, the temple was the political, economic, cultural, and religious center of the nation. Turning over the tables of the money-changers, driving out the merchants, shouting in high dudgeon, and upsetting the order of that place was striking at the most sacred institution of the culture, the unassailable...

Jillian Ludwig was an 18-year-old musician from Wall, New Jersey, pursuing her dreams in Nashville, Tennessee, studying music business as a freshman at Belmont University. On Tuesday, Ludwig, an “avid runner,” was fatally shot in the head by a stray bullet while she was out walking on a track in Edgehill Community Memorial Gardens Park. Tragically, the man later arrested as the shooting suspect is far from a stranger to police. In fact, the Davidson County District Attorney revealed the suspect was previously charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon as recently as April, but the case went nowhere....

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel reportedly lost her cool at Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy during Wednesday night’s debate in Miami, Florida, but the RNC denies the claim. Authoritarians, Hillary Clinton explained Wednesday, don’t “usually telegraph” what they’re going to do, but when they do, you should “take [them] at [their] word.”She then proceeded to telegraph exactly what Democrats are doing, and plan to continue doing, to bring about — as she put it — “the end of our country as we know it.”Of course, in Wednesday’s appearance on “The View,” she accused Donald Trump — whom Clinton has clearly not forgiven for foiling her presidential aspirations — of being responsible for all those things. Trump, Clinton said, “means to throw people in jail who disagree with him,...

We wish to extend our best wishes for a “Happy Birthday” to former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis, who turned 90 last week. Mike Dukakis served as governor of our state from 1975-79 and then again for two terms from 1983-91. He was the Democratic nominee for President in 1988, losing to Republican George H.W. Bush in a contentious election that was marked by immense distortions of Dukakis’s record, including the infamous Willie Horton ad that invoked racial stereotypes and played to the worst instincts of white voters. For those too young to know about Mike Dukakis, we will mention three...

(Cao et al., Cell, 2023) Scientists in China have announced the birth of a primate like no other, with eyes that shined green and fingertips that glowed yellow – and those were just the observable features. Beneath the skin and deep within its genes, this creature was apparently even more remarkable. The lab-born male monkey was the product of an unprecedented experiment, which used the pluripotent stem cells of two genetically distinct fertilized eggs from the same monkey species to create one living and breathing long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis). This is not the world's first living monkey artificially formed from...

This image shows the orientation of the magnetic field in the distant 9io9 galaxy, seen here when the Universe was only 20% of its current age — the furthest ever detection of a galaxy’s magnetic field. Dust grains within 9io9 are somewhat aligned with the galaxy’s magnetic field, and due to this, they emit polarized light, meaning that light waves oscillate along a preferred direction rather than randomly. ALMA detected this polarization signal, from which astronomers could work out the orientation of the magnetic field, shown here as curved lines overlaid on the ALMA image. Even before Tuesday’s elections, many progressives insisted the question of whether protecting abortion rights wins elections was already asked and answered. Democrats made abortion rights the centerpiece of their campaign advertising during the 2022 midterms, a cycle where Democrats outperformed expectations, kept control of the US Senate, and staved off a red wave. Polls last year also found abortion rights to be a significantly motivating issue for both independent and Democratic voters. Abortion rights ballot measures won in all six states where they appeared in 2022, including states like Montana, Kentucky, and Kansas that otherwise elected Republican candidates.

Doctors at New York University this week announced "the first successful transplant of a partial face and an entire eye." And the road to getting there was both heartbreaking and incredible: In May at NYU Langone Health in New York City, the surgery was performed on a 46-year-old man who had suffered severe electrical burns to his face, left eye and left arm. He does not yet have vision in the transplanted eye and may never regain it there, but early evidence suggests the eye itself is healthy and may be capable of transmitting neurological signals to the brain. The...

CNN cut ties with a freelance photojournalist based in Gaza hours after a photo emerged purportedly showing a top Hamas leader kissing the photographer on the cheek. Freelancer Hassan Eslaiah can be seen in the photo being friendly with Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind behind the October 7 massacre that killed 1,400 Israelis. The photo came to light after HonestReporting, a pro-Israel media watchdog group, published a report Wednesday claiming Eslaiah and other photojournalists were embedded with Hamas terrorists on the day they attacked Israel last month.
