MADISON, Wis. — The Goodman Community Center set a new record Monday for first-day registrations for its Thanksgiving Basket Drive. Organizers said 2,911 families and individuals signed up for the drive. About 2,400 families and individuals signed up to receive a basket on the first day of registration last year. The Center wants to make sure 4,000 Dane County families have a Thanksgiving dinner this year. After one day of registration, they’re over halfway to reaching their goal. “I’m not surprised that so many people have already registered for a basket this year,” Food Pantry Manager Francesca Frisque said. “Families’...

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday the state will end its COVID-19 state of emergency in February 2023, nearly three years after it was first declared. The months-long timeline will better prepare the state health care system for any surge in COVID cases that may result after the holidays and will give local governments time to make necessary changes, Newsom’s office said. “Throughout the pandemic, we’ve been guided by the science and data – moving quickly and strategically to save lives. The State of Emergency was an effective and necessary tool that we utilized to protect our state, and we...

The cost of living in Cairo has soared so much that security guard Mustafa Gamal had to send his wife and year-old daughter to live with his parents in a village 70 miles south of the Egyptian capital to save money. Gamal, 28, stayed behind, working two jobs, sharing an apartment with other young people and eliminating meat from his diet. “The prices of everything have been doubled,” he said. “There was no alternative.″ Around the world, people are sharing Gamal’s pain and frustration. An auto parts dealer in Nairobi, a seller of baby clothes in Istanbul and a wine...

Danny Masterson, former star of the long-running sitcom “That ‘70s Show,” is about to face three women in court who say he raped them two decades ago at a trial whose key figures are all current or former members of the Church of Scientology. Opening statements could begin as early as Tuesday in the Los Angeles trial of the 46-year-old Masterson, and while a judge has expressed her determination not to have the church become the center of the proceedings, it will inevitably loom large. Masterson is charged with raping the women between 2001 and 2003 in his home, which...

The homeless woman charged in the murder of a 12-year-old Paris girl who was found stuffed inside a suitcase reportedly told investigators that she had forced the child to take a shower before sexually assaulting her — and then boasted about “selling body parts.” Dahbia B., who was indicted Monday in the grisly killing of 12-year-old Lola Daviet, told investigators that she took the girl to her sister’s apartment, forced her to take a shower and then “committed harm of a sexual nature and other violent acts against (Lola) that caused her death,” according to Agence France-Presse.

LONDON/MADRID (Reuters) - Dozens of ships carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG) circling off the coasts of Spain unable to secure slots to unload have prompted grid operators for the country to warn they may have to suspend loading to deal with this "exceptional situation". Europe is facing an energy supply squeeze as Russia has progressively cut gas flows after the West imposed sanctions in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in late February. The region has had to find alternative supplies, including LNG, but the arrival of multiple cargoes of the superchilled fuel has exposed Europe's lack of "regasification" capacity,...

The Cygnal poll, which was commissioned by The White Law Firm and the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, found Whitmer leading Dixon by 5 points, 49 to 44 percent. Most polls have shown Whitmer with a larger lead, some by double digits, but a CBS News-YouGov poll from earlier this month found her lead to only be at 6 points. FiveThirtyEight’s polling average has Whitmer leading Dixon by...

The head of Britain's electricity and gas systems' operator has told households to prepare for blackouts between 4pm and 7pm on weekdays during "really, really cold" days in January and February if gas imports are reduced. John Pettigrew, the National Grid chief, said blackouts would have to be imposed during the "deepest darkest evenings" in January and February if electricity generators did not have enough gas to meet demand, especially if there is a period of cold weather. Britain gets 40% of its electricity from gas-fired power stations while gas heats the vast majority of homes. Although Britain does not...

Let me factor in another point. The one area neo-Leninists and cultural-Marxists have been able to keep the flames of division burning with great intensity have been the highly successful adherence to the fallacious myth of there being such a thing as skin color. Add to that induced cultural inferiority displayed with blissful idiocy, and it has a crippling effect upon the susceptible. I am of course speaking of those who value melanin content more than they do jobs skills, parenting skills and the importance of impulse control. When this amalgamation of dystopia is fully realized, what will it portend...

Not being a dope, you likely realized a long time ago that it was going to take a lot of energy to manufacture the components of the future green energy utopia. Wind turbines, solar panels, electric cars, and so forth — there is lots of steel, other metals, and silica involved that all need to be melted at high temperatures to get formed into the devices. How are they going to achieve that at reasonable cost using just the wind and sun as energy sources? Up to now, the main strategy has been to buy most of the devices from...

The still uncertain but more than 100 death toll of Hurricane Ian and its vast devastation of Florida homes and businesses have evoked descriptors such as “historic” and “Biblical proportions.” Those terms, while appropriate, are eclipsed in the timeline of Florida history by the hurricane in September 1928 that killed an estimated 3,000 people in the Everglades. That number not only dwarfs Ian, but also exceeds the 1,800 fatalities of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and is second only to a 1900 hurricane that killed 5,000 people in the Galveston, Texas area.
