Pediatric encephalopathies of genetic origin cause severe motor and intellectual disabilities from birth. One of these diseases is caused by mutations in the GNAO1 gene. In order to understand the finer details of the resulting disturbances, scientists conducted atomic, molecular and cellular analyses. They discovered a mutation leads to the replacement of one amino acid by another in protein sequence. This is enough to disrupt the activation and deactivation mechanism of the encoded protein, thereby altering the ability of neurons to communicate correctly with their environment. A simple zinc molecule, commonly used in other contexts, could restore, at least partially,...

Socialist Left Police State S--t (if any one knows more polite legal terminology to adequately replace this expression, please tell me what it is) has ruined Australia's reputation as a free nation. If this tyranny becomes entrenched, Australia will grow weak and collapse, as threatens now in Jo Biden's America. (I know this phrase is offensive to many, but, legally or illegally, the guy does hold the White House as we speak.) The solution is truth. The solution is freedom. God bless beautiful Di, a former police woman in Australia's biggest state of New South Wales, who is now quite...

Chelsea Clinton was sharply suited for Variety‘s Fall 2022 Power of Women event. Held in Beverly Hills, the occasion honored the accomplishments of numerous women across different fields. Clinton arrived with her mother, Hillary, as well as actress Sandra Oh, in a deep red jumpsuit. The wine-hued ensemble featured a folded sleeveless bodice and silky texture, complete with long pleated trousers. Clinton finished her tonal ensemble with a delicate gold necklace with small pendant accents. She also accented her outfit with a pair of metallic gold sandals; though the open-toed pair wasn’t fully visible, they did appear to feature squared...

Chronic exposure to high levels of a flavoring chemical called diacetyl, which is found in many foods and beverages, can cause lung damage. Now, a study suggests that even short-term exposures to this flavoring chemical can damage the lungs of mice when paired with a second issue, like the flu. Diacetyl, which gives microwave popcorn its buttery flavor, was first linked to flavorings-related lung disease in the early 2000's when a group of former microwave-popcorn factory workers came down with the illness. A similar lung disease has been seen among coffee roasters who inhale large concentrations of diacetyl, which is...

It may be time to pull out your step counters and start adding walking to your daily to-do lists. A recent study indicates taking 10,000 steps each day can help cut your risk of dementia by half. Researchers monitored the steps of 78,430 adults between the ages of 40 and 79 over seven years. Results showed that 9,800 steps a day could reduce the risk of dementia by half, and there was no added reduction of risk if participants went over that number. Walking fewer steps daily, such as taking 3,800 steps, was found to reduce the risk by 25%....

First, they defied the male dominion over the Afro-Cuban Santeria religion by being secretly ordained. Then, they shocked the patriarchy by performing a ritual long considered the exclusive preserve of men. Twenty years after first breaking the glass ceiling, Cuba's Santeria priestesses are still battling to claim their place. The Santeria religion is hundreds of years old -- a mix of beliefs brought to Cuba by Yoruba slaves from West Africa, and Catholicism. Experts say about 70 percent of Cubans are followers of Santeria.

ROME — Vatican Cardinal Michael Czerny insisted Tuesday there is no place for discussion with those who doubt or deny the “climate crisis.” Over the past seven years, “the environmental crisis of our common home has worsened drastically,” declared Cardinal Czerny, who like Pope Francis is a member of the Jesuit order. The cardinal’s words came during a presentation in the Vatican of a new documentary film celebrating the pope’s “great encyclical letter Laudato Si,” a 2015 text dealing with care for the environment and the climate crisis. “Apocalyptic floods, mega-droughts, disastrous heatwaves, and catastrophic cyclones and hurricanes have become...

In Ermold v. Davis, (6th Cir., Sept. 29, 2022), the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a Kentucky federal district court decision that Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis does not have qualified immunity in a suit against her for stopping the issuance of all marriage licenses to avoid issuing licenses to same-sex couples. The court said in part: [P]laintiffs have not only “alleged” but also now “shown” that Davis violated their constitutional right to marry.... And, as we held three years ago, that right was “clearly established in Obergefell.”The court held that insofar as Davis has raised a free...

Asenior member of the state Duma, Russia's parliament, said that any U.S. states that want to break away from the country and instead join the Russian Federation will be considered. The comments come only a week after Russia declared that four regions of Ukraine had become Russian territory, following referendums that were widely criticized by Ukrainian and Western officials as being sham. These were Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine and Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in the south. The votes supported the regions changing from Ukrainian to Russian territory. State Duma deputy Alexander Tolmachev was responding to an online poll that...

The hail of indiscriminate missile fire across Ukraine this morning was Russia's brutal payback for the attack on the Crimean bridge. Russian President Vladimir Putin called it the response to an "act of terrorism" which he blamed on Ukraine. But it was also Mr Putin's response to hawks in his own camp who have been growing increasingly restless with Russian losses in the war and increasingly loud with their calls for tougher action. Those pro-Kremlin officials and TV hosts who were depressed and dejected just days ago are now cheering this assault on their neighbour, gloating and even dancing in...

Moving videos showed stations completely packed with people on platforms, stairs and stationary trains — and a respectful silence other than a chorus of voices singing the national anthem and other traditional songs. One clip caught people cheering and giving a huge round of applause after one of the underground performances came to an end. “How I adore our people,” said one of the Ukrainians sharing footage, Lina Molina, calling it proof they are a “nation...

Gavin Newsom signed into law Thursday a bill which pro-family advocates say claims custody of every child in America for the purpose of gender “transitioning.” The Sacramento Bee reports that Democrat state Sen.
