A one-two punch: Low levels of a flavoring chemical and mild flu may damage lungs (Diacetyl, from microwave popcorn and coffee roasting)
Medical Xpress / Univ. of Rochester Med. Ctr / Am. Journal of Physiology-Lung Cellular and Molecular ^ | Oct. 10, 2022 | Susanne Pallo / Matthew D. McGraw et al

Chronic exposure to high levels of a flavoring chemical called diacetyl, which is found in many foods and beverages, can cause lung damage. Now, a study suggests that even short-term exposures to this flavoring chemical can damage the lungs of mice when paired with a second issue, like the flu.

Diacetyl, which gives microwave popcorn its buttery flavor, was first linked to flavorings-related lung disease in the early 2000's when a group of former microwave-popcorn factory workers came down with the illness. A similar lung disease has been seen among coffee roasters who inhale large concentrations of diacetyl, which is a natural byproduct of the coffee roasting process.

The study set out to test whether low-level, short-term exposures to the same chemical could produce a similar effect.

"We found that a single exposure to diacetyl for short periods of time did not result in much lung damage," said Matthew D. McGraw. "But when mice are exposed to another common environmental exposure, like flu, the double hit can cause airway disease similar to what we see with high-dose, long-term exposures to diacetyl."

Mice were exposed to diacetyl for one hour a day over five consecutive days at levels similar to what coffee roasters encounter at work. Mice were then exposed to influenza A, which typically causes seasonal flu in humans.

Within two weeks of exposure, more than half of the mice that received this one-two hit died, while all mice in the control groups (exposed to diacetyl alone, flu alone, or neither) survived. Lungs from mice exposed to the "two-hits" showed significant impairment of lung function and airway repair compared to controls.

"Our study shows that common environmental exposures that seem harmless on their own can have very serious impacts on lung function and long-term respiratory health when combined," McGraw said.

TOPICS: Health/Medicine
KEYWORDS: coffee; diacetyl; microwavepopcorn; popcorn
By themselves, flu or short occasions with diacetyl do no consequential harm to lungs, but, together, half of the mice died.

I would not roast coffee or eat microwave popcorn if having flu symptoms, to be safe.

Diacetyl was found to be what was causing holes to develop in people’s lungs after vaping, it was a flavoring (who wants popcorn flavored smoke?)

Wasn’t the vaping itself but it gave the nanny state an excuse to go after the industry.

I don’t pay attention to any of these things. We are all going to die. Sometime.

That said, I appreciate the posting of these things in these threads (I think it is a nice and considerate service provided by ConservativeMind (because there are a lot of people who do follow these things, and I think it is a great and philanthropic effort to aggregate them) but they aren’t for me.

I do think the threads provide a valuable source of this kind of information, and I think there are many who appreciate it.

To me, this is just the world we live in. If I were fifty years younger, I think these things might certainly have more impact on me. But now, at this stage of my life, it feels akin to throwing a brick in the Grand Canyon.

When I was a kid, we broke into abandoned military buildings on the bases I lived on, and broke huge pieces of asbestos plaster off of pipes and threw them against the bulkheads. They would explode into a cloud of fine white powder, and we would be covered head to toe with that fine, white asbestos powder.

My brother found a bottle of pure mercury, I estimate probably 250 ml worth. We poured that on the floor, into our hands, did everything but drink it.

My first real job with a real paycheck was with an entrepreneur who was mixing epoxy resin with glass microspheres, and baking it in a pizza oven in an attempt to create sound attenuating material for things like noisy line printers back in the early Seventies. My job was to clean out the huge mixing pots using acetone and rags. I had my head inside one of those large aluminum kettles used for making institutional sized portions of food, cleaning out that stuff with a can of acetone and a rag. No protection. I came to with my nose and cheeks completely numb, my ears buzzing, and my boss’s shoes in my line of sight as I sat on the floor looking down them.

All that stuff will probably kill me eventually. Can’t do anything about it now. But I look at these things that tell me eating eggs and dairy is bad, wine is bad (or good depending on the day) coffee is good (or bad, depending on the day) and ten gazillion other things.

I gave up decades ago trying to keep track of what is good or bad for us. And I am completely disillusioned with the state of science, stemming from what we see being done with “climate change” and what kind of “science” was done with the vaccines.

Peer review is a joke in the sciences now, and that includes medicine.

In the 1970s I worked in a graphic art place using glacial acidic acid to burn printing plates for newspapers. I sucked in that yellow vapor every night for years. At 72 I’m still alive, but who knows for how long.

Different times, right?

I had high blood pressure and abnormal liver blood tests when I joined the Navy nearly half a century ago, but they took me anyway. My wife says it is all that stuff I messed with as a kid. I think she is right.

I guess for me...it is all gravy!

Agree. Almost all of these threads are interesting, and for me personally about 10% of them apply to me and are very helpful. I appreciate the hard work.

Anyone who uses a microwave oven for popcorn is a problem for society. Popcorn must be popped in oil.

I generally tell people to use an air pop popcorn popper. Popcorn is low on carbs and a fantastic pre biotic aka bug food for the lower gut.
