On September 7, three days before the national Mid-Autumn holiday weekend, my husband and I received separate phone calls from the pandemic prevention office in the Shanghai district where we live. We were informed that we had become sub-contacts to a recently confirmed COVID-19 case and were required to be taken to a centralized quarantine facility. Having lived through the excruciating two-month lockdown of the city, we have adapted to the new post-lockdown reality: lining up for PCR tests every two or three days, scanning venue codes posted outside every public location to facilitate contact tracing, showing a green health...

SNIP Elsewhere, vaccine rollouts have meant learning to live with the virus, but this one major economy stands alone, clinging to a response designed to quash every outbreak. Strict lockdowns, mass testing, constant scanning of health codes and travel restrictions have stopped China's hospitals from being swamped. But it's come at a cost - official youth unemployment stands at 18.7%. Earlier this year it was nudging 20%. Yet even in the face of significant economic and societal pressure, the government has not really turned to the one thing which might hasten an end to the crisis. While it has been...

In my opinion, the Jan. 6 Committee has had two main aims that have nothing to do with the riot, justice, or “threats to democracy.”It’s always been about trying to damage President Donald Trump so that he can’t run or win again, and to hurt the Republicans’ chances in the midterms. If you understand it through that lens, then you know that they are largely admitting defeat on one of those major goals with their latest action.Committee Chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MI) said that they would not be putting out a report until after the election. They will be having a...

Planned Parenthood is receiving backlash for a cartoon ad that teaches teenagers different ways of delaying puberty, some of which they claim 'work like a stop sign.' One of those ways is through the use of puberty blockers, which can halt voice deepening, facial hair growth, and menstrual cycles. The organization posted the video to its YouTube account in January, but it has recently resurfaced on the Eye Inside the Classroom (EITC) twitter account. In the video, cartoon figures tell teenagers that puberty looks different for everyone, particularly if they're trans, intersex or nonbinary, and what they're experiencing during puberty...

China called for "patience" with its COVID-19 policies and warned against any "war-weariness" as local cases soared to their highest since August, days ahead of a pivotal Communist Party congress. Many parts of the world are learning to coexist with COVID-19, but China has repeatedly quashed any speculation of a let-up in its tough counter-epidemic policies, which can range from locking down a local community to sealing an entire city, even though fatalities remain low by global standards and symptoms, if any, are mostly mild. Pressure on local officials to stop outbreaks as soon as they spring up has risen...

For a president who entered office claiming human rights would be the central tenet of his foreign policy, President Joe Biden has had a mixed record halfway through his presidency. There's no question that his leadership on the world stage in defending and supporting countries like Ukraine has sent a strong message to autocrats like Russian President Vladimir Putin that their nefarious actions will not be tolerated. President Biden's willingness to stand up to bullies both here and abroad has the potential to be a key hallmark of his presidency. But his administration's handling of Azerbaijan's illegal war and unprovoked...

According to the German security services, last weekend's sabotage of train cables in northern Germany was a "politically motivated act". This is reported by German media. The fiber optic cables were also damaged, causing the backup system to fail. Offenders with inside knowledge The security services assume perpetrators with insider knowledge. Germany has in the past experienced politically motivated acts of sabotage, recalls Der Spiegel...

The following is a lightly edited transcript of remarks made by Denise Long during a Newsweek episode of The Debate about black voters and the Democratic party. You can listen to the podcast here: What I'm calling for is not for black Americans to bounce between the better of two evils, one or the other. It is to get the black American population to realize that we are the swing vote. Democrats can't win an election even without black Americans, which is why they make all these promises. Unfortunately, their theory of change requires black Americans to make our equity...

For most economists the velocity of money circulation is an important factor in determining the prices of goods and services. If, for example, the quantity of money increased by 10 percent in a given year, while the price level has remained unchanged it would mean that there must have been a decline of about 10 percent in the velocity of money circulation. If the quantity of money remained unchanged but there has been a 10 percent increase in the price level in a given period, it would mean that there must have been an increase in the velocity of money...

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is pushing for Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts to fill the vacant seat left by Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), who recently announced his retirement. Sasse confirmed on Oct. 6 that he will retire early from the Senate and will likely take a position as president of the University of Florida. Now, Graham wants Ricketts to take Sasse’s place in the Senate—a position to which Ricketts could theoretically appoint himself. Under Nebraska law, the governor appoints a new senator if a vacancy arises in the middle of a term. However, Ricketts has been clear that he does not...

Both FBI officials who briefed Facebook before the social media giant opted to censor The Post’s initial reporting on Hunter Biden’s infamous laptop made small-dollar donations to Democrats during the 2020 election cycle, according to campaign finance records and court filings. An amended complaint released Monday by Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt’s office says Laura Dehmlow, the section chief of the bureau’s Foreign Influence Task Force, and Elvis Chan, who manages the cyber branch of the FBI’s San Francisco field office, were “involved in the communications between the FBI and Meta that led to Facebook’s suppression of the Hunter Biden...

In Vladimir Putin’s speech on February 24, announcing what would be a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine (in his official Orwellian euphemism, a “special military operation” in the Donbas region), a whole paragraph was dedicated to the West’s supposed undermining of “traditional values”: "Properly speaking, the attempts to use us in their own interests never ceased until quite recently: they sought to destroy our traditional values and force on us their false values that would erode us, our people from within, the attitudes they have been aggressively imposing on their countries, attitudes that are directly leading to degradation and degeneration,...

Reflections on the anniversary of a historical turning point... Within fifty years of the death of Mohamed in A.D. 632, his successors had engineered military conquests all across the Middle East and North Africa. While their pace slowed after that, as they worked to consolidate their gains and establish bureaucratic management over the extensive lands they had won, the Muslims continued to expand, crossing Gibraltar and conquering much of the Iberian peninsula, in preparation for their eternal goal: the conquest of Europe. Now, Europe in those days was hardly the organized collection of developed, defined, modern states we know today....
