  • Where are the bugs this summer? Experts say fewer insects worldwide could create problems we can’t swat away

MADISON, Wis. — While monarch butterflies and bees have been making headlines, the world is losing more bugs of all kinds to habitat loss, invasive species, pesticide use, and more human causes. You may have noticed that, for example, if you’re slapping more mosquitos away lately. “I have noticed that I haven’t been bitten like I have not had as many mosquito bites this year,” Lisa Briggs, a garden coach from The Bruce Company, said. That may seem like a relief over the summer, but hate to clip your wings — “while a lot of people think that’s a great...
  • Help with viewing Mac DVD on Windows 10?

    08/21/2022 3:34:01 PM PDT · by LouAvul · 28 replies
I have a DVD that was made on Mac equipment. It will not play on my PC w/Win 10. The gentleman who recorded it said to download MP4 converter to my computer. I did so. (VLC) I inserted the disc and got to where I selected the option for disc type. "DVD." No dice. I selected the other type that I think is the abbreviation for the Mac type? Anyway. The DVD is not playing with MP4 "converter" or the "player." Very hinky. What am I doing wrong?
  • Manchin's Rude Awakening - Own Party Betrays Him After He Caved on Inflation Reduction Act

    Western Journal ^ | August 21, 2022 | Elizabeth Stauffer
Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin’s agreement late last month to back the disingenuously named Inflation Reduction Act came as a shock to Republicans and likely to members of his own party as well. Up until then, the West Virginia senator had been the one vote standing between the Democrats’ passage of needless and expensive climate change legislation and fiscal sanity. In order to secure Manchin’s vote, President Joe Biden and Democratic leaders promised to facilitate the approval of a gas pipeline in West Virginia. This would require passage of legislation that would “overhaul the permitting process for energy infrastructure,” according to...

Tom Weiskopf, winner of the 1973 Open Championship, whose talents translated from a star-crossed playing career to critical success as a golf course designer, died at his home in Big Sky, Mont., on Saturday. Weiskopf was 79 and had been battling pancreatic cancer since being diagnosed with the disease in late 2020. News of Weiskopf's passing became public on Sunday morning shortly after a message on social media from Tom Watson. A native of Massillon, Ohio, and a standout at Ohio State University in the years after his rival Jack Nicklaus played for the Buckeyes, Weiskopf won 16 times on...

Zion National Park officials have provided additional details regarding the flash flood that left one person missing Friday. Multiple hikers were reportedly swept off their feet by a flash flood in the Narrows near the Temple of Sinawava. Later in the evening, the National Park Service received a report of a hiker, who has been identified as Jetal Agnihotri of Tucson, Arizona, who was “overdue from a trip in the Narrows.” Officials say that during the initial response, park rangers found an injured hiker who had been swept downstream several hundred yards. That hiker was taken to the hospital in...
  • Tested: How Towing Affects the Electric Pickups—Hummer EV, Rivian R1T, and the Ford F-150 Lightning

Car and Driver | August 16, 2022 | DAVE VANDERWERP
These new electric pickups are wonderful towing companions, aided by massive horsepower and torque that allow for easy merging with the flow of interstate traffic, and their heavy curb weights (between 6855 pounds for the F-150 and 9640 pounds for the Hummer) lend an impressive stability when lugging a three-ton trailer. But you won't want to be going far, as a full battery will take you a mere 100 miles in the Lightning, 110 miles in the R1T, and 140 miles in the Hummer. Although the Hummer consumes electricity at the highest rate of the three, its considerably larger battery...
  • New Polls Suggest Oz Narrowing Gap in Pennsylvania Senate Race

Two new polls of the U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania suggest that the race may be closer than previous polls — and pundits — have suggested. The race between Lt. Gov. John Fetterman (D) and Trump-endorsed Dr. Mehmet Oz (R) is being closely watched. Sen. Pat Toomey (R) is retiring, giving Democrats an opportunity to pick up a seat and thwart Republican ambitions to take control of the upper chamber of Congress. Fetterman has led Oz in most polls, often by double digits. However, the race may be tightening. One poll, by former Republican internal pollster Carleton Polling, suggests that...

Facebook is rolling out its rules for the midterm elections in a post from Meta about how it plans to throw its weight around in the weeks leading up to the November midterm elections. According to a post published last week from Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, 40 teams will be monitoring the elections. The post cites one side of the forces allegedly trying to disrupt an election by noting that Meta has “banned more than 270 white supremacist organizations, and removed 2.5 million pieces of content tied to organized hate globally on Facebook in the first quarter...

New York City officials are set to enroll at least 1,000 young border crossers — most of whom arrived on migrant buses sent from Texas by Gov. Greg Abbott (R) — in public schools across the five boroughs as the city grapples with how to reduce classroom overcrowding. • Treadmill exercise shown to improve Parkinson's symptoms in mice (Fenofibrate also helped)

Regular treadmill exercise helped improve Parkinson's disease symptoms in mice in a recent study. Scientists found positive results in using exercise to stop the spread of the α-synuclein protein and reverse biochemical, cellular, and anatomical changes that occur in the brains of mice with Parkinson's disease in the absence of drugs. The mice ran on a treadmill consistently in 30-minute intervals for six days a week, over two months. Pahan and his team were quick to note while treadmill exercise is something that can be easily available and accessible, some patients with Parkinson's might not be able to run on...

“Time to remember the best voting advice I’ve heard: Voting isn’t marriage; it’s public transport. You are not voting for “the one” who is absolutely perfect. You are getting on the bus. And if there isn’t one going exactly to your destination, you don’t stay home and sulk; instead, you take the one going closest to where you want to be.” I read this yesterday over on Bookworm’s blog. She does a weekly compilation of memes, cartoons, old photos, and things to think about. This is from her latest. Two American Thinker articles about Dr. Oz, one by Rajan Laad and...

NEW DELHI: External affairs minister Dr S. Jaishankar has said that China is "disregarding" border pacts, which is "clearly casting a shadow" on relationship between the two countries. Jaishankar was interacting with the Indian community in Sao Paulo on Saturday. Responding to a question on India’s relationship with China, Dr Jaishankar said, “They (China) are our neighbours. Everybody wants to get along with their neighbours on reasonable terms. I must respect you and you must respect me. If we have to build a relationship then there has to be mutual respect, we need to be sensitive to each other’s concerns,”...

Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” that she was “ashamed” that Republicans like Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Gov. Ron Desantis (R-FL) are unfit for the presidency. [cut] Karl said, “You’re going to work against election deniers, if it’s not Trump and if it’s somebody like Ron DeSantis, Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, these are all people who tied them closely to Trump, will you oppose them? Can you see yourself supporting any of them?” Cheney said, “It would be very difficult. When you look at somebody like Josh Hawley or Ted Cruz,...
