WASHINGTON — Lever Alejos arrived in the nation’s capital last week on a bus with dozens of fellow Venezuelans who had journeyed more than 1,300 miles from their broken country to the United States. After being processed by U.S. border authorities, the migrants were released into South Texas, free to go where they wanted. Alejos, 28, said he was offered two options: a $50 bus ride to San Antonio or a free bus ride to Washington, D.C., paid for by the state of Texas. “I wanted San Antonio, but I had run out of money,” said Alejos. Since April, Texas...

Grim surveillance footage captured the moment a handcuffed Connecticut man broke his neck in the back of a police van after the driver braked suddenly, causing him to smash his head. The driver of the van, Officer Oscar Diaz, said he was forced to brake hard in order to avoid a collision, police said. Diaz continued driving to the station — despite an injured Cox...

The Justice Department on Tuesday filed a lawsuit that challenges Idaho’s restrictive abortion law, arguing that it conflicts with a federal law requiring doctors to provide pregnant women medically necessary treatment that could include abortion. The announcement is the first major action by the Justice Department challenging a state trigger law since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June. The court’s decision has led some states to enact restrictive abortion laws and is likely to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states in the U.S. The Justice Department brought the suit because federal prosecutors believe Idaho’s...

Kidney stones can cause not only excruciating pain but also are associated with chronic kidney disease, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. If you've experienced a kidney stone once, you have a 30% chance of having another kidney stone within five years. Changes in diet are often prescribed to prevent recurrent symptomatic kidney stones. However, little research is available regarding dietary changes for those who have one incident of kidney stone formation versus those who have recurrent incidents. Researchers designed a prospective study to investigate the impact of dietary changes. Their findings show that enriching diets with foods high in calcium and...

Abortion providers asked the Kentucky Supreme Court Tuesday to vacate the Kentucky Court of Appeals order that blocked a temporary ban on the state’s 2019 “trigger law” to restrict abortion access. The providers told the state’s highest court in an 11-page filing that the appellate court order “has upended 50 years of the status quo by halting abortion access in the Commonwealth.” They said patients previously scheduled for abortion care are now being turned away, and they will continue to be turned away if the Supreme Court does not vacate the appellate court order. Every day that abortion is banned...

Gov. Tim Walz was whisked away by staff after a voter confronted him Wednesday about his handling of the George Floyd riots. “Why would you let a police station burn to the ground and not send in the troops?” a man asked Walz during the annual Farmfest gathering in southern Minnesota, according to a video captured by independent photojournalist Rebecca Brannon. Walz briefly began to answer the question but was cut off by a staff member who said “we’ve got some folks waiting for us … we should get up there.” The governor then took a picture with a supporter...

She listened to the verdict with a blank stare on her face. While recapping the evidence and giving her findings Thursday, the judge said the 31-year-old Griner illegally brought drugs into Russia.

Former President Donald Trump shocked the political world on Monday when he issued a generic nonspecific endorsement of “Eric” in Missouri’s U.S. senate primary, leaving it open-ended whether he meant Attorney General Eric Schmitt or former Gov. Eric Greitens. While both sides fought vigorously for the endorsement and campaigned in the state just as aggressively, Trump’s decision to remain ambiguous at the 11th hour provided some much-needed levity and humor to an otherwise nasty primary campaign.“There is a BIG Election in the Great State of Missouri, and we must send a MAGA Champion and True Warrior to the U.S. Senate, someone...

The bank's baseline forecast is for GDP to fall by 1.25% in 2023 and 0.25% in 2024, the first instance of two years of annual economic contraction since the 1960s.

From Our Special Correspondent. ARMY OF THE POTOMAC, Friday, Aug. 1, 1862. At about 1 o'clock this morning the rebels opened a rapid fire from three batteries of six guns each, planted on the South side of James River, at three different points. One battery was stationed on the bank nearly opposite the Harrison House, another opposite the mail dock, and the third opposite the Westover House. Judging from the unexploded shells, the pieces used were 6, 10 and 12-pounder field pieces. They also threw two or three shells filled with petroleum, evidently for the purpose of firing the shipping,...
