Years ago, my mother got a letter from her sister in Cuba complaining about the lack of food and specially seafood. So my mother said to her Cuban friend: Can you believe that? No fish in Cuba. And her friend said: How can that be? It's an island. I remember going fishing and catching everything. And my mother responded: Yes, I remember that, too. But this is "Cuba comunista" and the fish have all gone to Miami. Wonder what my late mother would say about the shortage of sugar in Cuba? Yes, there is not enough sugar in Cuba today....

“And He said to them, ‘Go!’ And they came out and went into the swine, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and perished in the waters” (Matthew 8:32). Our Lord Jesus will always have the upper hand over demonic forces. But we should never forget that demons, as fallen angels, still possess tremendous power and strength (cf. Dan. 10:21; Rev. 12:4). For example, when God sent an angel with a message for Daniel, a demon named “the prince of the kingdom of Persia” delayed the angel for three weeks, and God had to send...

The parable of the prodigal provides a powerful illustration of the acceptance that comes when we’re given a heavenly position in Christ. You know the story. A young man took his inheritance from his father and squandered it on sinful living. Once the son had became completely bankrupt morally, emotionally and physically, he thought of his father. He was convinced he’d lost all favor with him. Scripture tells us that this broken young man was full of grief over his sin and cried out, “I’m unworthy. I’ve sinned against heaven.” This represents those who come to repentance through godly sorrow....

... Pelosi and Tsai used the spotlight offered by the visit to praise democracy and play up mutual security interests. "Facing deliberately heightened military threats, Taiwan will not back down, we will firmly uphold our nation's sovereignty and continue to hold the line of defense for democracy," Tsai said. "At the same time, we wish to cooperate and work in unity with democracies around the world to jointly safeguard democratic values." ... Immediately after her arrival, China's Defense Ministry said Beijing would launch a series of "targeted military operations" to counteract Pelosi's visit to Taiwan. China's People's Liberation Army Eastern...

A veteran police officer who was named “Detective of the Year” in 2019 was charged with exchanging sexually explicit messages with someone he thought was a 14-year-old girl. Gregory Daniel Beaumarchais, 43, is facing a misdemeanor charge of annoying or molesting a victim believed to be under the age of 18, Orange County District Attorney officials said on Tuesday “Police officers are entrusted with the sacred responsibility to safeguard society from harm,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement.

Korea's Trade Minister Ahn Duk-geun called Wednesday for the establishment of close communication channels with the Chinese government and civilian entities to boost bilateral trade and investment. Ahn made the remarks during a meeting with experts in Seoul as Korea is seeking to strengthen economic relations with China on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. "It is crucial to create environments where Korean and Chinese companies continue trade and investment in a stable manner amid growing external uncertainties," Ahn said. "For the goal, the two nations' trade...

The Washington Secretary of State stopped counting votes at 8:45 PM, less than one hour after the polls closed. Beutler and Newhouse, Republican Congress people who voted for impeachment, both look like they will survive their Top Two primaries. The main problem so far - 5 Republicans in the Beutler primary, and 7 Republicans in the Newhouse primary. Beutler got just 38% of the GOP vote. Newhouse got just 37% of the GOP vote. The GOP primary votes got sliced up so many ways there was no path for MAGA candidates to knock the incumbent RINOs out of the Top...

Just over a year since the promulgation of the motu proprio Traditionis custodes, dioceses around the United States continue to issue plans for implementing Pope Francis’ law on the celebration of the Extraordinary Form of the liturgy. In recent weeks, the bishops of both the Archdiocese of Washington and the neighboring Diocese of Arlington have published their local plans for Traditionis custodes, scaling back the availability of Extraordinary Form Masses, and prohibiting the use of preconcliar liturgical books for the celebration of other sacraments and funeral liturgies. The words “unity” and “pastoral” feature prominently in recently issued plans, as they...

There is a great deal of discussion these days about how desperately America needs more immigration to supplement our workforce. In fact, this canard is one of the few areas of steady bipartisan consensus in an increasingly polarized time. It has so enthralled our political and thought leaders that mass immigration has been sold as the silver bullet to solve a wide variety of issues in the country. "Immigration can help inflation" is just the latest messaging moment (keep in mind this basically admits immigration reduces wages). Before inflation was the issue, wage stagnation was a concern and we were...

No meetings planned between No. 3 US politician and South Korean president, foreign minister By Kang Seung-woo A visit by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to South Korea is likely to perplex Seoul further in the handling of its relations with China, which are already at an inflection point due to pending bilateral yet volatile issues. Pelosi is widely expected to urge longtime ally South Korea to respond to the U.S.-led campaign against China's authoritarianism, according to diplomatic observers. The U.S. house speaker, the third-highest official in the U.S. government, scheduled to arrive here, Wednesday, for a two-day trip following...

The majority of voters going to the polls Aug. 16 will likely be choosing one of three candidates for Alaska’s U.S. Senate seat as their pick-one primary option: incumbent Republican Lisa Murkowski, Republican Party-endorsed Kelly Tshibaka or Democratic Party-endorsed Patricia Chesbro. It’s the top four candidates, though, who will advance to the November ranked choice voting general election. Sixteen other names are on the ballot. When asked who the fourth candidate will be, most political insiders didn’t know or hadn’t given it much thought. But a few names float to the top. “I think it is anybody’s guess,” said Amber...

WASHINGTON — The defeat on Tuesday of Representative Peter Meijer of Michigan, the young conservative scion of a supermarket empire who voted to impeach President Donald J. Trump, was another sign that the party’s conservative core is bent on casting out those who have dared to break with Mr. Trump, who has embarked on a revenge tour aimed at punishing his adversaries. Mr. Meijer was defeated by a far-right challenger endorsed by Mr. Trump, becoming the second of 10 Republicans who broke with the party to back impeachment to be ousted in a G.O.P. primary. Republican voters in the Grand...
