On July 25, 1898, U.S. Army General Nelson Miles and his troops landed on the south coast of Puerto Rico during Spanish-American War, in a campaign framed by the fledgling American power as 'to bring the blessings of Freedom and Liberty to another People long oppressed'. I recently learned of the following poem penned by my late great-grandfather on the occasion of the third anniversary of that event. The poem was written in turn-of-the-century Castilian, which is a little difficult to translate (this cheap translation is mine), but I hope that you can understand the sentiment of the time (the...

Donniesha Green and Tauzhanae Williams as well as employees Demarius Lovette and Michael West were all charged in the fight. Republican Representative James Comer believes that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) will take action against Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, within the next two months. Comer told Fox News's Maria Bartiromo Friday that he's "pretty confident" that "something's going to happen with the Department of Justice in the next 60 days with respect to Hunter Biden because he's left a trail that's so obvious that no one, even the most partisan Democrat and the most partisan Biden supporter in the Department of Justice, they can no longer turn a blind eye to his wrongdoing." Biden is...

Former President Donald Trump and his estranged vice president, Mike Pence, are holding rival campaign events in Arizona on Friday, turning the governor’s race into a broader referendum on the Republican Party’s future. Pence talked up the successes of what he called the Trump-Pence administration but did not directly address his growing feud with the former president as he urged voters to support Karrin Taylor Robson for governor. If you elect Robson, Pence said, “you can send a deafening message heard all across America that the Republican Party is the party of the future.” The remark appeared to be an...

Two children have tested positive for monkeypox in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed Friday. One is a toddler from California; the other is in an infant who is not a U.S. resident and was 'transiting through' Washington D.C. Neither had contact with each other. Health officials said both children were 'doing well', but warned children under the age of eight are at high risk of severe monkeypox. It is thought both children likely caught the virus from 'household contacts'. Dr Rochelle Walensky said the children both had contact with gay or bisexual men —...

Continuing allegations that the 2020 election was “stolen” are roiling our politics and dividing our country. Indeed, now a significant percentage of the American public doubts the legitimacy of our system. That caused us, political conservatives who have spent most of our careers working to uphold the Constitution and the conservative principles upon which it is based, to delve deeply into those charges and gauge their accuracy. All of us have either worked in Republican Party politics at multiple levels and in various capacities or worked in the government as a result of Republican appointments. Indeed, one of us, Theodore...

Texas Senator Ted Cruz mocked progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Friday night after the New York Democrat pretended to be handcuffed during a pro-abortion rally this week. The Republican legislator used Ocasio-Cortez's arrest as a punchline while denouncing the sky-high 9.1 percent inflation rate seen just last month as a failure of the Biden administration. He also took a shot at California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell for his past links to an alleged Chinese spy named Fang Fang. 'Inflation is out of control. Food is skyrocketing. Electricity is skyrocketing. Health care is skyrocketing,' Cruz told his audience. 'It is so...

SAN FRANCISCO - The San Francisco Labor Council is the latest group to call for Ann Hsu's resignation, following the school board member's racist questionnaire response denigrating Black and brown families. In response to a candidate questionnaire for the San Francisco Parent Action Coalition, Hsu, who sits on the San Francisco Unified School District's board of education, wrote that "unstable family environments" and "lack of parental encouragement" posed major challenges in educating Black and brown students.

The Nativity of St. John the Baptist among the Serbs, by analogy with many other festivals, is called Ivanjdan. In some places special church folk traditions are associated with it. Interestingly, not all Serbs know about them, and locals in some regions aren’t aware of their existence. There is a tradition among the Serbs of Vojvodina when on Ivanjdan, girls and women weave large wreaths of grass and flowers, which then decorate houses and churches. And in the village of Sivac even a whole festival of folk traditions takes place, and wreaths are woven in the evening, on the feast’s...

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced a measure Thursday designed to protect churches and pregnancy centers from “radical pro-abortion activists” in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. The Pregnancy Resource Center Defense Act would essentially strengthen the penalties for attacks on places of worship, as well as pro-life pregnancy centers. According to a summary of the measure from Hawley’s office, the bill would increase criminal penalties “from a misdemeanor to a felony for first-time offenses, and increasing the criminal fine from $10,000 to $25,000” while also increasing the mandatory minimum for arson from five years to seven....

These were Governor Abbott's words when he signed SB 8 into law, essentially banning abortion in the state of Texas. Today Governor Newsom signed SB 1327, California’s answer to Texas’ perverse bill that placed bounties on doctors and patients. If Texas can ban abortion and endanger lives, California can ban deadly weapons of war and save lives. If Governor Abbott truly wants to protect the right to life, we urge him to follow California’s lead.

Since Feb 2020 34 priests have died and just one man has signed up for training. Dublin archdiocese is at a crossroads. The new strategy "Building Hope" sees Dublin parishes sharing assets including finances, personnel and volunteers and could very well see lay-led liturgies at funerals. Due to the aging clergy and lack of new admissions into the seminary, the Catholic archdiocese of Dublin is bringing in new measures, including appointing priests to oversee multiple parishes and sharing assets volunteers and finances. They may even allow lay members of the church to preside over funerals. There are 207 parishes in the...

Pope Francis ruled out the possibility of staying in the Vatican or returning to Argentina in the event of an eventual resignation from the papacy. In an interview with Univisión and Televisa broadcast July 12, Pope Francis said he would “surely not” stay in the Vatican if one day he resigned. He wouldn’t return to Argentina either, he added, because “I am the Bishop of Rome.” He said he would be “the Bishop Emeritus of Rome.” Asked if he would reside at Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran, the Holy Father said “that could be,” since he would like to retire...
