"Priestless Funerals"? Dublin's Catholic Church Looks for Solutions to Critical Numbers [Ireland]

Since Feb 2020 34 priests have died and just one man has signed up for training. Dublin archdiocese is at a crossroads.

The new strategy "Building Hope" sees Dublin parishes sharing assets including finances, personnel and volunteers and could very well see lay-led liturgies at funerals.

Due to the aging clergy and lack of new admissions into the seminary, the Catholic archdiocese of Dublin is bringing in new measures, including appointing priests to oversee multiple parishes and sharing assets volunteers and finances. They may even allow lay members of the church to preside over funerals.

There are 207 parishes in the Archdiocese of Dublin. Reports show that since February 2020 34 priests have died. Only one student entered the seminary during that time to train as a Catholic priest. While sharing parishes may be a solution now the archdiocese has warned that this is just a stopgap that would solve the problem for perhaps five or 10 years.

Throw my body in a hole once I’m done with it. I don’t need a funeral.

Those priests should be able to marry if they wish to.

I wonder if this is a reflection on the seminaries themselves. Are straights welcomed?

Send missionaries from Africa?

Sounds like I'm being sarcastic, but it really might work.

They could have married before they were ordained if that’s what they wanted. Nobody forced them to become priests and they fully knew what they were giving up before they did.

There are many missionary African Catholic priests serving in the US (and they tend to be very orthodox and holy). Vocations to the priesthood in Africa is booming along with the growth of the Church there. At the same time, it is sad and an indictment on our society that we have become a “mission” territory.

There are plenty of African and Vietnamese priests who could fill the positions. Wouldn’t that be ironic for a country that used to export lots of priests and nuns?

I think the Polish immigrants are the only Catholics left in Ireland.
